my grand father and his family arrived as immigrants to scranton, pennsylvania back in the late 1880ser worked at the scranton lace mills for 50 years. that's where my dad and my brothers and i spent a lot of wonderful time there. my grand father lived in a duplex in scranton on diamond avenue. we went to the port street methodist church he built with his own hands with the help of his friends and others a cottage. so we spent a lot of time driving around pennsylvania because we took every route we could imagine coming from chicago which is where i was born and where my family lived. a lot of those experiences really embedded deep in my heart, how to respect the dignity of hard work. and if you do your part you and your family should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. that to me is the promise of america. it kept my grand father working in the mills every day, day after day, year after year until he retired at the age of 65. he was so proud of the work he did and the people around him were proud of it, too. people who made things were given respect and dignity. we got to get back to
