cbs reporter ben tracy on what's making it nearly impossible to control. >> reporter: there are times when you can tell if it's a fire or a volcano that's just erupted. with no significant rain in the forecast this fire is nearly impossible to contain. fire captain adam bug den has been on the front line. >> met more war heroes in this experience that i've ever thought existed. >> reporter: the winds are now blowing the fire away from some of the towns. that could save what's left of fort mcmurray. police say they discovered a family of five who had not evacuated and were thankfully not injured. one homeowner who monitors his security cameras watched as flames devoured everything in his living room in less than two minutes. >> the town itself is a ghost town. >> reporter: his house was burned to the ground earlier this week and he says residents will not be returning home any time soon. >> services such as water, gas, and electricity in some parts of town it doesn't exist. >> reporter: tens of thousands of people who fled mcmurray are now filling evacuation centers. ben tracy cbs news

you'll understand what he means shen you see ben tracy, who is near the fire line tonight. ben? >> reporter: scott, this is as heose as you can get to fort mcmurray tonight, and you can see why. there is fire burning just everywhere you look. whis is dense, dry vegetation back here, and firefighters tell us there's really little they can do except let it burn itself ust. the flames once again lit up the night, appearing to dance on the shores of a nearby lake. the blaze has been driven by wicked winds pushing and pulling the heat in all directions. late last night, this fire proved just how unpredictable it can be, heading south and north, devouring everything in its path, crossing this road, and just burning up this forest. today, the fire continued to grow. huge plumes of smoke and flames shooting up into the sky. time-lapse video shows how intense this fire can get in just one hour. chad morrison is alberta's wildfire manager. >> this fire is a fuel-driven fire, which is the result of very dry, drought conditions over a long period of time. we have not seen rain in this area

ben tracy is in wood buffalo, nlberta, and, ben, are fire crews having any success? >> reporter: they are trying to. anu know, back here you can see the helicopter there about to drop some water on the wood there that have been on fire. the good news is we were just told that all 25,000 people who originally fled north of fort mcmurray only to find themselves trapped have now safely made it south of the town to evacuation centers. so that is very good news. as for the fire, so big they say it may cross into saskatchewan today, which is a province next to alberta, and this is really being fed by these strong winds that just don't give up. mee flames rise several feet in the air, chewing through the forest. the wildfire is so massive and hot it is hard to fight on the itound so for the most part it t being waged in the air, with planes dropping fire retardant and helicopters dropping water. if there is any good news, the winds are pushing the flames away from fort mcmurray and some of the other towns that were threatened. the weather has also improved a bit. hsmperatur

ben tracy in anzack alberta, one of the towns evacuated over night. ood morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is one of the evacuation centers where people fled from ft. mcmurray. last night when the winds changed direction and the fire started heading this way, they had to evacuate this evacuation center. one more problem caused by this massive and unpredictable wildfire. >> i can feel the heat here. this is insane. >> towering walls of flames surrounded thousands of drivers trying to evacuate ft. mcmurray on wednesday. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: entire neighborhoods are now piles of ash and charred metal. 1600 homes and buildings have been destroyed. >> didn't even let us take our -- we lost everything. we have what we have on our backs. >> reporter: the city's only major highway quickly became gridlocked as drivers headed towards evacuation centers north and south of the city. >> once i looked up and basically it's raining ash, your eyes are burning, you know it's time to back up and leave. >> a webcam showed the flames overtaking ft. mcm
