kelly cobiella is following the story for us. what do we know about this?: well, this is a huge stadium. you are right. it was a big game day, as well. it holds 75,000 people and 30 minutes before kickoff an announcement was made to evacuate the stadium because of a suspicious device. it was a very calm evacuation. no sense of panic or anxiety there but a bomb disposal unit was brought in along with sniffer dogs. we understand within the past half an hour, a controlled explosion has been done with -- concerning that package. we still don't know if this was a false alarm or if there was some sort of explosives in the package. the premier league came out with a statement saying there was a decision made to abandon the match. they have cancelled it. they will reschedule it and did it because of matters of security. they said the safety of employees and supporters was really their primary concern. so alex, we are keeping an eye on this. we expect to hear from officials in the next hour, we would say, after this controlled explosion too to see whether or not the

let's bring in kelly cobiella standing by with the latest out of the news conference. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, first of all, you've been mentioning this quote by the top minister for civil aviation in egypt saying that terrorism was a more likely cause than a technical failure. this comment came after very intense questioning by reporters who were really pushing him to talk about potential cause. he said he didn't want to speculate. he wanted to with withhold judgment until the debris was found and an investigation could continue. he said -- i'm going to quote here if i can, he said that -- stand by that -- terrorism is a stronger cause than airport -- than technical failure. he doesn't want to draw conclusions but the analysis points to terrorism as a cause with a higher probability. really pressed by reporters to wade into this speculation about what might have happened to this flight. you mentioned the ntsb. it is monitoring the situation because the engines on board that airbus a-320 were american, an american make, made by iae international aeroeng

kelly cobiella has new information. missing before arriving in cairo in egyptian air space. we will have more in moments. >>> new information on the plane situation. tom? >> reuters is reporting that the egyptian military picked up a signal from the plane at 4:26 local time. what is interesting to that, that is two hours after the plane was worted missing. missing at 2:30. and two hours later, getting a signal from the plane. i'm wondering if that is true. that part of the world, you have to take everything with a grain of salt to begin with. it is possible we are talking to an under water pinger that would be on a flight data recorder. that is important. and able to operate immerse in 20,000 feet. in the egyptian military has picked up a pinging sound from the flight data recorder, that will be critical to be able to hone in on the cockpit voice recorder, the black boxes of the airbus a-320. the flight data recorder is built to withstand the force of a high speed impact, fire. it's made of the titanium or stainless steel boxes. kit record literally thousands of flight param

kelly cobiella is following this. what's the latest from investigators? >> we're still waiting to hear from greater manchester police about this controlled explosion which they conducted an hour ago. this is because a suspicious package was found from a stadium official 30 minutes before kickoff. it was found inside the stadium in the northwest part of the stadium. an announcement was made to evacuate. it was a calm evacuation from what we understand. this is what some of the folks at the game had to say about it. >> suspicious package found. >> how did you hear about that? >> police. >> how long was the game. >> we went to our seats, about 15 minutes before the game and we were advised to move away from the stadium. >> the controlled detonation took place and the game was cancelled with the league saying the decision to abandon the match was taken after police advised of the necessity to deal with this suspicious package. the statement went on to say when it comes to matters of security, obviously it is right to place the safety of supporter and employee

kelly cobiella is in paris, she has the latest on the investigation and the new security measures french officials announced in response to the november attacks. what more are you learning there at the airport, i'm sure you can see those changes. >> reporter: well, there have been changes here at the airport, particularly in the last few months, and also in the forecast day or so. some looking into everything that happened in the last sort of 24 hours of when that plane was on the ground here, that plane was here for 74 minutes. investigators want to know who came into contact with it, they are checking into maintenance crews, there would be catering crews, cleaning crews. all sorts of people who could have come into contact with the plane in those 74 minutes. that's one avenue of investigation. the other thing that's happening is we're hearing of these new clues which you've been talking about with, frances, these messages sent from the plane in the last few minutes of flight. first there were two alarms that indicated some sort of problem with cockpit windows, then two smoke alarms, on

i want to turn for more now to kelly cobiella in our london bureau. tell us how all this is being received overseas. >> reporter: it's no surprise that world leaders, particularly people in europe who have spoken about this, are not particularly impressed with donald trump's vies, his rhetoric or some of his ideas. the muslim ban is obviously the most high profile which we've spoken about several times and both the prime minister in this country and the new muslim mayor of london have spoken about. but they're also worried about ideas of isolationism, ideas on trade, his talk of immigration, and of security of things like nato. talk of allies not pulling their weight financially or in terms of resources to fund nato and other places where the u.s. supports its allies. just for a moment, i want to tell you about this new poll that's out just within the past few days. this is a ugov poll, very commonly used pollster in the u.k. and throughout europe. they polled six countries, the public in six countries, u.k., france, germany, mexico, canada and japan.

kelly cobiella joins us from london. good morning again, kelly. >> reporter: good morning.rs since this search began for egyptair flight 804. it disappeared over the mediterranean in the early hours overnight, about three hours into the flight with 66 people on board, 56 passengers, seven crew members, three security officials. we have heard just in the past few minutes the egyptian minister of civil aviation saying that the search is focused around the greek island of karpathos in the southern aegean sea close to crete. he want talk about the radius of the search but said it was closer to karpathos than it is to egypt. no sign as yet of that plane or any confirmation on what happened to it. we do know from u.s. defense officials telling nbc news they have no intelligence at this point or satellite imagery to indicate the airliner was the target of a terrorist attack or that it exploded in flight. egyptian officials sticking close to the line that they will not even call this a crash until they find some sort of debris but saying it looks as though this plane has gone down.

we want to go to nbc's kelly cobiella, who has the latest on what we know so far. kelly, what have you gathered. >> well, just to reset if we could, betty, to go over the information we know at this point. first of all, we should note that the sun has now been up in cairo for about 90 minutes. that means obviously they have daylight to perform the search. military personnel with egypt on site or in the region where this plane disappeared from radar. it's been reported by the airline that that was about ten miles inside egyptian airspace, over the mediterranean ocean. so the good news there, they obviously have daylight to work with at this point. the sun's been up for about 90 minutes. just to give you an idea of what happened here, so we're now talking about a plane that disappeared from the skies, disappeared from radar. no emergency call, in the middle of the night essentially. this flight disappearing at 2:45 in the morning local time, cairo time. it's now been missing for nearly four hours. we've just gotten an update on the number of people on board. 56 passe

kelly cobiella joins us with that part of the story. good morning to you. >> matt, the egyptian civil aviation minister not even wanting to admit that this is a crash. insisting on calling this plane missing until debris is officially found. there was a hijacking back in march of an egypt airplane. the crash of that metrojet plane over the sinai back in aucts of last year and now this, over the mediterranean. this morning as the search for egyptair flight 804 intensifies, the disappearance of the aircraft with 66 people on board marks the latest in a string of recent fatal and nonfatal incidents surrounding egyptian aviation security. just two months ooh an egyptair flight from alzand ria to cairo was hijacked making an emergency landing in cyprus. the hijacker thought to be armed with an explosive belt. that belt turned out to be fake. while everyone on board escaped unharmed, egyptian officials were left scrambling to explain their security policies. in october 2015, an airbus 321 was likely brought down by a bomb killing 224 people.
