. >> bob redell with more on the $100,000 decision. >> good morning. last night pittsburgh city council voted to spend that money, that $100,000 on new video cameras going up along highway 4. this will be in addition to the extensive surveillance network that is in operation around pittsburgh city streets. this decision comes as there was another shooting along the freeway yesterday afternoon. you see police walking highway 4 looking for evidence after a shootout that started in antioch and ended up on the busy roadway. since november, chp says four people killed in roughly 20 other shootings. these shootings are hard to solve. there aren't many witnesses because many drivers can't hear the gun shots.ç the suspects get away quick because they are driving at highway speeds. law enforcement, city leaders and members of the community hope these new video cameras be installed could help put those shooters in jail. >> to find those people that decide that pittsburgh is the place to be the wild, wild west. >> i have to be honest with you, when i get on the

today in the bay rob redell is headed to the scene and will have a live report. a chase turning into a crash scene in the middle of san francisco. a popular tourist spot. the suspect narrowly missing a cable car in the turnaround right on powell and market streets. >> stephanie chuang live there now. >> this area is popular. you usually see people lined with cable cars. good thing it happened before midnight. it is clear now. the chase ended here at the cable car turnaround. chp says that is where it tried to pull over an infinity sedan before midnight for a license plate infraction. the driver took off, missing a cable car and crashing in this turnaround area. there was visible damage on the driver's side door. four people inside tried to run but with the help of sfpd, officers were able to arrest three of the four people. one person did get away. there has been no active search for that person. what is strange is what police found around, egg cartons around and under the car and eggs on the roof of one nearby car. what is unclear is how the eggs ended up there

bob redell live where it unra l unravelled. woman managed to escape with minor injuries. >> she was the wife of the man killed. she was able to escape with minor smoke inhalation that she is going to be okay. one of the challenges for the firefighters when they arrived at this home was a live power line down across the drive way. that limited the amount of water they could initially use. it also delayed their entry into the home. they had to wait until pg&e could deenergize the line. it appears to have started in the garage, spread to a car in the driveway and also to a portion of the rest of the house. the fire department tells us the garage was so involved when they arrived, once they sprayed water on it, the roof collapsed. the wife told them her husband might still be inside. firefighters made entry in the house. it was full of smoke. sometimes rescuers had to get down on their hands and knees. took ten minutes to find the man, transported him to the hospital where he was declared dead. >> that's our job. our job is to safe

bob redel live at gunn high school in palo alto.it's not the students' fault, it's the test administrators. >> correct. so far 169 students at gunn high in palo alto have been told they have to retake either the biology or calculus exam because of mistakes made by the people at school who administered these tests. the school sat some students too close together without giving them different versions of the exam. the college board which creates the exams realized the error when the school submitted the seating chart. this is for the exam administered earlier this month. the students took the same version of the test which violates college board rules. board found the same mistake was for other exams that will need to be taken. board is looking into six other tests. the school district says gunn high had been using a similar protocol and seating arrangement for years. for the students, however, the thought of having to retake an exam they spent so many hours studying for is stressful, i thought i had a big weight off my shoulder and f

bob redell is outside in oakland. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris and scott. we've actually moved on top of the b.a.r.t. building where the board of directors and leadership from the three unions stepped out for a news conference. no one is saying here that they think the contract is necessarily a great deal but they feel that this will help them get past the big strikes of 2013. it was within the past hour the b.a.r.t. board of directors ratified the agreement with the three unions representing 3500 b.a.r.t. workers. both sides reached this deal a month ago after months and months of negotiations. here's the high level. it's a four-year deal that starts next year from 2017 through 2021. there will be salary increases each year. the first two years, 2.5% increases for the workers and in the last year, each year will be 2 3/4. there is pending litigation and they will receive continued ridership-based bonuses. >> i've heard some people describe us as getting to this agreement as some sort of a

nbc bay area's bob redell joining us. what are the neighbors saying? >> reporter: well, good morning to you. three neighbors tell us there had been a number of arguments in recent months at this home here on the 800 block of stella street. police believe it came to a head this past sunday morning. they say he intentionally set the fire at the home that killed his 5-year-old son. one neighbor says she spoke with the boy's mother who came running out during the fire who told her that he locked the door to the room where their son was located. >> she just said he locked the master bedroom, the baby's in my room, he locked the door. i can't get in. please, help somebody help get my baby out. >> reporter: the boy's mother suffered third degree burns in an attempt to save her child. she is still being treated at a local hospital. her 13-year-old son also suffered burns but was treated and released. people who know the family were, they left balloons and wrote messages on the walk in front of the home to remember the 5-year-old who couldn't be saved from sund

bob redell joining us live. quite the sight to see. morning. >> good morning to you.8:00, venus will finally get her head, a large crane will hearst the final block of this enormous statue that is being constructed inside the print place apartments here. when complete she will tower over the central plaza at 92 feet making her the tallest sculpture in the city. it will be only slightly shorter than new york's statue of liberty. the denver artist created venus out of stainless steel. venus was fabricated in china, shipped over in 70 pieces, put together in 11 blocks on site and each block weighing a ton. the head being that lastç bloc being hoisted on top venus' shoulders at 8:00. the apartments aren't scheduled to open until next spring. you will be able to see this sculpture in between the buildings. venus will not be the tallest sculpture in san francisco for long. there is 110 foot piece of are the being constructed for 2019. bob redell, today in the bay. >> pretty cool to check out. >> san francisco is a very romantic city. and they have the god of love. >> a lot

"today in the bay"'s bob redell is live. what do the friends say? >> reporter: well, unfortunately, he happened to see his friend collapse and die, kris. we spoke with the coroner's office. they have yet to determined what killed the 15-year-old during football conditioning yesterday here at sunol high where he was a freshman. this morning, some of his classmates gathered for a private moment on that field where he collapsed and died. many more wore his favorite color to school in honor of their friend who died so young and so suddenly. >> it doesn't even feel like he's gone. he's still in my heart but i don't even know what to say. i couldn't even sleep last night. >> reporter: that's abraham, one of gee van knee's close friends. it was still very hot yesterday, 83 degrees out. abraham says they were in the middle of running drills when his friend collapsed. >> it was just too hot and i guess he didn't drink enough water and he just passed out right in front of us. >> it looked like he tripped but wouldn't get back up. >> he was just a very nice pe
