from prison after nearly nine years devonte stanford should have never been there in the first place. >> i couldn't believe it. it's finally over. >> reporter: sanford confessed to the 2007 killings of four people inside a drug house on detroit's east side, a 14-year-old boy with vision problems found in his pajamas outside the crime scene. >> why did you make that initial confession? >> scared. like wasn't aware, you know, of the situation and the consequences. >> reporter: weeks after his confession, this man vincent smoothers confessed to the murders. prosecutors however did not reopen the case. today defending that decision. >> this was a guilty plea. a guilty plea was a plea under oath. not convicted by a jury or judge but convicted by his own words. >> reporter: devon day was released after his evidence suggesting an officer involved in the case my have lied under oath. tonight, detroit police are not commenting. >> this could have been done three, four, five years ago. >> reporter: he sits side by side with his mother who never gave up the fight. >> i know there is a god. he heard my prayers. >> reporter: 14 when arrested. devonte is now 23.
