tim: i love ben ginsberg. john: it's great having you on the set.up, the great katie couric is standing by. ♪ mark: as we said, today donald trump met with top gop butlers to discuss fundraising efforts. here to tell us about that meeting and all things trump, our correspondent katie turner, who joins us from outside trump worn awhere she has groove into the ground because she stands there a lot. katie: it's cold. mark: cold in june. i have heard mixed things about the meeting, but one person who is pretty reliable suggested the donors were upbeat. they like to schedule coming together. they liked trump's seeming enthusiasm about raising money. same thingard the from two sources who were inside the meeting who felt donald trump had a pretty warm reception from those donors. certainly, the trump campaign was positive about it. they talked about how they are going to raise the amount of money they need to raise. they also told us how good the chicken was at the four seasons, but with a big smile on his face. they talked about the electoral map and wha

ginsberg says they're going to do something about redistricting. what they come up with was dubbed the unholy alliance. it was an alliance between democrats in the south who were eager to increase the representation in congress and republicans with a lot of money and newfangled computer programs, and they worked together in many states in order to -- >> what was the interest of the black democrats working, it does some i cannot holy alliance. >> well, they are able to build the african-american caucus in congress to the highest level since after reconstruction in 1992, 1994. two, 1994. but the cost of that was that the republicans took many more seats so state like north carolina which had been eight-four democrats with the 12 members, suddenly flipped eight - for the other way. you pack all of the democratic voters into a couple of districts, you give yourself the rest. >> and so that's because the voting rights act. >> the voting rights act. >> where you want to have these majority, minority district so you end up with all of the black democrats

campaign afternoon we have nbc political analyst republican deal maker and elections lawyer ben ginsberg. ben, this is an extraordinary day. we've been speaking to michael beschlo beschloss. he said this has happened before but rarely just shy of a general election. give me your take of what you think was going on behind the scenes that led to the firing of corey lewandowski. >> well, turmoil in june is never particularly good. especially when it's a month before the convention. so the public reporting has talked about two competing factions within the trump campaign without denials from the campaign. so let's step that as true. if there are warring factions within the campaign that's a problem you need to correct. the fact that there are not more people on the ground, that the fund-raising has not yet hit stride are sources of worry combined with the fact that hillary clinton and her super pac are spending an awful lot of money in the next two weeks in eight battleground states to burn in, let's just concede, will be less than a positive notion about mr. trump. >> he said -- corey said

and i'm joined by political analyst ben ginsberg.to jeb bush who tweeted this week, donald trump should retact his comments, not defend them. there's no place for racism in the gop or this country, end quote. michael, would an apology really make a difference at this point? >> well, the nomination of the party of lincoln, the party of reagan is an honor, and part of that honor means you have certain responsibilities. one of those responsibilities is not to say remarkably stupid things to make it harder for our party to win in november. so i think an apology would be appropriate. >> but donald trump's campaign success after campaign pitfall after pitfall, something that would typically take down any regular politician has only emboldened him. why should this be different? >> there's a big different among the nomination fight winning state after state against a field of at times 16 other candidates. and what we're facing now, the main event, taking on hillary clinton. because the american people want change. they noah know that washing

others seeking the right to vote when the supreme court struck down the shelby case and as justice ginsberg put it throwing out section five of the voting rights act when it has worked to stop discrimination is like throwing away the umbrella in a rain storm because you are not getting wet. it has protected the rights of so many people. i was in arizona recently and if you read about their democratic primary or their primary generally a few months ago it was a mess. it was a mess because they reduced the number of places where you could vote. if the law had been in place they would not have been able to do that and guess where those places got reduced to most? where latinos live. that is unconsciousible. we have to do more about it. we have to do more to address economic inequality. we have to do more to rebuild the infrastructure of democracy. but, my friends, this time that we are living in is more than simply about educational access or inequality or the minimum wage or the affordable care act. all of those critically important issues. i really believed we are living in a moment in time

. >> justice ginsberg. >> my apology, you don't need to take the hobbs act -- >> take mr. dreebin's own example, he's running a business and he's taking $5,000 at a pop every time he arranges a meeting with the criminal division for somebody? >> sure, there's a statute that prohibits supplementing your public salary with private money. so if you're essentially taking outside money for performance of your duties, that's illegal. another statute that prohibits you from doing any -- taking anything from anybody whose interest could be substantially affected by the performance or nonperformance of your duties. that's another one. it would prohibit it. there's another provision of this bribery statute that prohibits you from taking any action, not just official action but any action in violation of your official duties. -- >> why aren't they any less vague? what you're saying is that holding a meeting, taking a phone call, having a party is not illegal, that this is something that you're entitled to do. so why would all of those statutes be any less vague? >> they may well be i
