orlando. and a vigil for the victims that will soon get underway at philadelphia city hall. i'm jaqueline london. tonight nbc 10 learned that one of the 49 victims killed was a high school basketball star from west philadelphia on vacation with her family in orlando. she is the youngest of the victims identified so far. we will share her story in just a few minutes. but first, the very latest on the investigation, the owner of a gun store where the shooter bought his weapons said the gunman passed a full background check. meanwhile, the fbi is trying to determine whether the gunman had recently scouted walt disney world and other locations as potential targets. >>> and hospital officials are very optimistic that the shooting victims being treated tonight will recover. >> i still believe god is great. i still believe that, you know what, we can have forgiveness even in this. >> nbc 10 has team coverage as we uncover more about the victims, the suspect and the investigation. let's begin with nbc 10's george spencer who joins us live from orlando. george, if you can, give us a s

joining us now from the great city of orlando is the first openly gay city commissioner in that city,. commissioner sheehan, thank you for joining us. i know there are a lot of demands on your time, i really appreciate you being here. >> thank you, rachel. it's been an exhausting 48 hours but that's nothing compared to what these families and victims have been through. >> how are the families and the victims themselves, your constituents directly affected by this, how are people coping now? >> they're having a terrible time. i mean, we've gotten resources. we had to get translators, a lot of these folks are hispanic and getting them the resources that they need. but it's just horrible. these families are just absolutely devastated. they're in shock. i was walking the streets and saw a mother looking for her son and it's the most heartbreaking thing. then she finally found out that he had passed. it was just -- it was just horrifying. you know, so many good people have lost their kids. these were young people, their whole lives ahead of them. we're doing what we can. i never thought as

mayor of orlando, of course, police, and, also, the governor of florida will update us on the latest in the investigation. >> good morning. yesterday was the most horrific day in the history of the city today of our community than ever. we came together united to support the families and friends of the victims. of the victims. we learned of space orlando police department and other law enforcement agencies responded heroickedly allowing hundreds to escape and breaching the wall killing the bad guy and rescueing dozens of hostages. the medical personnel that saved so many lives that were transported to the hospital are certainly heroes. and we turn it over to, we start thinking of the families and identifying the victims which was critically important. i cannot imagine being one of the parents or knowing your loved one could be among those that are deceased and having to wait to find out. the f.b.i. did an unbelievable job of clearing the scene by 11:00 all of the victims had been remanufactured and turned over to the medical examiner. they also stood tall and did their job and now all 49 of the 49 victims have been identify identifyied. 24 of the next of kin have been notified. with

joining us now from the great city of orlando is the first openly gay city commissioner in that city,heehan. commissioner sheehan, thank you for joining us. i know there are a lot of demands on your time, i really appreciate you being here. >> thank you, rachel. it's been an exhausting 48 hours but that's nothing compared to what these families and victims have been through. >> how are the families and the victims themselves, your constituents directly affected by this, how are people coping now? >> they're having a terrible time. i mean, we've gotten resources. we had to get translators, a lot of these folks are hispanic and getting them the resources that they need. but it's just horrible. these families are just absolutely devastated. they're in shock. i was walking the streets and saw a mother looking for her son and it's the most heartbreaking thing. then she finally found out that he had passed. it was just -- it was just horrifying. you know, so many good people have lost their kids. these were young people, their whole lives ahead of them. we're doing what we can. i never thou

orlando police tweeted out an image of the helmet. the eye injury to the officer could have been worse. cityls tell us at the peak, more than 300 people were inside this popular night sure here in orlando. dozens were taken to the hospital. one of the trauma centers is a few blocks from here which is one small bit of fortunate news in the middle of so much chaos and tragedy. we know at least one has been treated and released but many still face serious and critical injuries. more than a couple dozen surgeries performed today. six surgeons called in. the hospital tells us they've been training for an incident like this for the past 20 years. they hoped something like this never happened, but unfortunately that's what's happened, and they're doing their best to respond to the situation. we've been talking about this all day, and the city put out a tweet reiterating they don't want any vigils in the city of orlando. they don't want a public gathering that would involve law enforcement overseeing the scene. law enforcement is clearly spread thin right now. at this point they're urging people in

it's a matter of blocks away from orlando's city hall.st word of the tragedy came in after 2:00 a.m. that's when this gunman, the terrorist, entered. it became quickly a mass casualty event. it became quickly a hostage situation. and think of the following two stats. 103 people were struck by bullets last night. 50 of them died. 53 are part of the wounded being treated. one hospital performed 27 surgeries. and it took 11 police officers, a total of 11 cops, discharged their weapons trying to take this guy down. we try the say as often as possible when a terrible event takes us on the television that -- i believe it is still true that most police officers in this country retire without ever having discharged their weapons. we can't tell you how -- despite news coverage to the contrary -- how rare it is, especially in rural areas. you can go your whole life without ever using your gun. last night 11 city police officers in orlando had to use theirs to defend themselves and try take down this terrorist gunman. he was a lot of things accordin
