elizabeth palmer is in nice. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.ng a few more facts about the driver of the truck. he was 31 years old. according to bf mtm tv, very go police contacts here in france, he was facing divorce, his marriage was on the rocks. he was probably going to lose custody of his three small children. and he had also on top of it recently lost his job as a truck driver. nice is known as a recruiting center for isis. it sent many men off to syria and iraq, but there's absolutely no indication at this stage that he belonged to isis or was even a sympathizer. president francois hollande arrived here a little while ago. his job today will be to visit all the wounded in hospital and try and reassure a profoundly shocked country. meanwhile, we're standing on the boulevard where the attack happened, hearing from some of the witnesses. and this is what eric dratel had to tell us. he is an american who was here on vacation with his wife. >> we heard the pop, pop, pop sounds. and my wife who's actually deaf recognized the sounds as gunfire.

cbs news elizabeth palmer has more from london. >> reporter: villagers, in this area still cannot believe their beloved father jackes is dead. eighty-five years old he was a catholic priest for more than six decade and he was murdered on tuesday during mass when two men broke in the church, and slit his throat. one of them was this man, social media pictures appear to show him as a youngster growing up in northern france. but sometime in 205 he was suddenly radicalized. twice he tried to go and fight for isis in syria and was arrested under france's terrorism laws. at the time of the attack he was await willing trial living with his parent and wearing an electronic tag. this was a classmate. >> we tried to bring him to his fences, he says but he would quote the koran saying france is land of the un believers and we should go to syria and fight. there have been at least 12 attacks of this kind in europe in less than two years. most of the attackers had a history of petty crime, some had a history of mental ill ness. and, all were vulnerable to violent extremist propaganda that would sudden

( gunfire ) within minutes, armed police had flooded in. they immediately evacuated this busy shopping area and shut down munich's public transport system as reports came in of more shots fired nearby. this amateur video apparently shows an armed man on the roof of a parking garage. he insults foreigners and then shouts, "i'm a german." outside the shopping mall, ambulance crews treated the wounded and covered up the dead. police spokesman marcus de gloria martens said this was a terrorist attack, but who did it and why is unclear. "we're looking for up to three perpetrators," he said, "with long guns on the run." munich is locked down tonight. the main railway station is closed and people are still trying to get home on foot. police have advised them once they're there to stay there as they confront the possibility of armed terrorists on the loose in the city, possibly looking for an opportunity to kill again. scott,

[gunfire] before he was stopped at last by a hail of police bullets, leaving a trail of dead and dying victims. even before the ambulances got there, ordinary citizens did their best to help. among the dead, there were at least ten children and teenagers. bouhlel was 31 years old, born in tunisia, but resident in france in a first-flflflr apartment in this non-descript building in the middle of nice, having recently lost his job and in the midst of divorce. you can still see mohamed bouhlel's name stuck to the doorbell of an apartment where he lived, estranged from his wife and kids. he was employed as a truck driver. and he was known to police. he had a history of v

elizabeth palmer has more from nice where conflicting accounts are emerging about the truck driver. abeth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as you mentioned, isis this morning online claimed credit for the attack, which is not the same as claiming responsibility. it may be that as in the orlando shootings, this young man, mohamed lahouaiej, was inspired by isis propaganda he read online, but whatever the case, whatever his motivation, one thing is clear, he has ended 84 lives and ruined hundreds more. people who live in nice along with visitors to this famous last night at a memorial near the scene of the massacre. mohamed lahouaiej 31 years old and born in tunisia was the man behind the wheel of the truck that barrelled into the festive crowd on thursday night leaving a grim trail of dead and dying. but why he did it is still a mystery. the french prime minister described him as a terrorist but when we visited the nondescript apartment building where he lived estranged from his wife and son his neighbor saw there was no sign of a muslim. he drank during ramramadan, she said.
