my name is scott, the director of the national governors association. so please feel free to take your seats. and welcome. this is the 108th summer meeting of the national vernors association, and taking place, obviously, with a backdrop of serious, major issues across the nation and the world and, of course, two major party conventions that are taking place in the next couple of weeks. now, i'm very happy to introduce today the chairman of the national governors association from utah, governor herbert. and we have the vice chairman, governor terry mcauliffe of virginia. of course, our host, the longest serving governor in the history of the united states, terry branstad. we're so happy to have him. and now -- [applause] and it's funny. people keep saying, wow, the meeting has been going great so far. i say it's because of governor branstad. anyway, i'm going to turn this over to the gentleman moderating this event, david. many of you know david. he's been with "the des moines register." he's been in many prestigious positions. he's been on television in

the median price of a home sold in june was nearly 5% higher than a year ago, according to the national association of realtors. that's because supply is down from a year ago and has been heading down now for over a year. tight supply means more competition. >> in may we saw the average stays on market 12 days, less than two weeks so things are moving pretty quickly. >> reporter: nationally in june days on market fell to the lowest in seven years according to red fin. nearly one-quarter of homes sold in just two weeks. to meet the demand, builders are finally starting to put up cheaper homes again, but buyers have to pay a higher price in terms of convenience. >> builders are willing to go farther out now than they were before, farther from the urban core and into the more remote suburban areas and get lots and develop them, and then they can offer homes in these affordable price ranges. >> reporter: but millenial buyers seem to like the city life, waiting longer to get married, have children and consider the suburbs. for alborda there was simply no appetite to leave town. for "nightly business rep

lily eskelsen garcia heads the country's biggest union, the national education association, representing teachers across the nation. she joins me now from philadelphia. welcome to the program. lily garcia: thank you, i'm thrilled to be here. fernando: thank you. as you know, across the country we have uneven public school systems. some that are top-rate, some that are failing the lives of many children. what is a cogent strategy to fix those broken systems? lily garcia: we have the every student succeeds act. that calls for a dashboard of better indicators of success and finally indicators of services and support for those kids. what we are calling for at the national education association is -- why not go into thoset public schools? those schools where everybody knows where those are in your state. you drive through the mcmansions and you can find some of the finest public schools in the world. take an inventory of what's in those schools, the programs and supports in those schools and , make that your state standard for services and support for all kids. fernando: and let me ask you so
