i'm farrah elliott.'m the curator of the house, and it's great to get to follow matt who gave you a real sense of what 19th century page life was like and what some of the real defining elements of being a page 150 or almost 200 years ago are. what i want to do today is walk you through the experience of a single family's pair of pages that they had -- that they sent to the house in the 1860s. the details of it really comport with what matt has been talking about today. it's also based on letters for the most part. it's -- for those of you who are the pre-otts generation, the letters will seem a little familiar. the content of them. their daily lives were a mix of their complicated ties back home and the communications that any kid might experience. ordinary work in the chamber and these extraordinary moments of witnessing history. the letters that we use to find out more about elliott and birdie and what page life was like then, they're really kind of -- it was a scatter shot approach to preserving them

so tell me a little bit about robert elliott. >> elliott's one of the interesting members. he's from south carolina and the majority of african-american members during the 19th century come from south carolina, seven members all from that state largely because it's a majority african-american population and their districts are majority african-american. and so there's support for a black candidate. elliott is a wonderful orator and he's one of these people who invented himself as he went along. you get the sense that he was a true character, but he had a great classical education. he came up after reconstruction. worked on a newspaper. he had some journalism background. then he moves up into the state assembly in south carolina. and he comes to the house for two terms in the early 1870s and he is one of the men who comes on to the floor and talks about the importance of passing the 1875 civil rights bill. and gives some speeches that are picked up in the northern press and they just swoon over him. and one of the speeches, he actually, kind of a point/counterpoint debate wi

wisn 12 news' tim elliott is live at police headquarters with the latest. tim. >> it's been another all hands on deck kind of morning for the milwaukee police department. they say they were prepared for the possibility of a second night of unrest and that's exactly what happened. overnight, large crowds showed up in milwaukee's sherman park neighborhood. police officers and sheriff's deputies were on hand to keep the peace, but there were some confrontations. one person was hurt when someone opened fire near sherman and burleigh at 11:00 p.m. an armored vehicle was brought in to pull that shooting victim to safety. a couple hours later, news someone set a car on fire. authorities rushed to the scene minutes later to put it out. the police department is active on twitter since this started on saturday and updating with the tweets. we haven't heard this morning yet how many people were injured last night, how many possible arrests were last night and we hope to learn more information later in the day. live in milwaukee, tim elliott, wisn 12 news. >> overnight

here's wisn 12 news' tim elliott, with details on one of the largest buyers out there. tim: it's called the blue cut fire, and since tuesday it's burned more than 35,000 acres. it's burning near san bernardino. some mandatory evacuations are still in place, others have been lifted. officials estimate that nearly 83,000 people were ordered to evacuate. more than 1500 firefighters have been working to contain the fire. as of last night, the blue cut fire is about 22% contained. california's governor has issued a state of emergency for the county. it's still not clear what started this fire. ben: an update on the orlando nightclub shooting, doctors say the last victim who remains in the hospital has improved slightly. condition since the shooting on june 12. now, that person's condition is one step up, at guarded. the name of the patient has not been released. 49 people were killed in the shooting and more than 50 others were hurt. melinda: right now, people in louisiana are struggling to clean up after devastating floods. the water is still high in some areas. around 40,0

wisn 12 news' tim elliott has more on how it got there. tim? >> people in the neighborhood woke up on monday and found the vandalism. police say two teenagers painted racial slurs and other offensive words on 27 pieces of property, it all adds up to tens of thousands of dollars in damage. people in the neighborhood say they're annoyed but know it could have been even worse. >> i was expecting to come out to smashed windows or slashed tires. i'm really thankful it was just spray paint and none of that stuff, but still annoying to wake up to that. >> police say they don't know why the teenagers went on the vandalism spree. officers went door to door in the neighborhood helping people ben, back to you. >> thank you, tim. 4:34 now. >> president obama changes the lives of two wisconsin men yesterday by commuting their sentences. in all, 111 people's sentences were commuted all for drug-related charges. >> a new berlin man serving time in virginia had 300 months taken off of his sentence. he'll serve 15 years instead of 40. and an evansville man will

wisn 12 news' tim elliott is in the newsroom with the latest damage reports. wednesday, five of them near indianapolis. you can see on the map the colored icons show the twisters and the paths they took. kokomo was hit the hardest by those storms. right now, people whose homes were damaged or destroyed are cleaning up and they have help from neighbors, volunteers, and even strangers. they're all working together to clear broken tree branches off of roads and homes. the tornado that hit kokomo was an ef-3, the largest of wednesday's tornadoes. back to you. >> tim, thank you. >> overnight, another earthquake hit central italy this time a four-point-seven. it's just the latest aftershock to rock the area after a massive 6.2 earthquake hit on wednesday. right now the death toll stands at 267 people. more than 350 others are hurt rescue crews are still searching for people who may be buried under the rubble. several villages in central italy were nearly destroyed by the quake. >> people in southern florida are getting ready for a heavy storm. they are stocking up o

wisn 12 news' tim elliott is live at police headquarters with the latest. tim. >> is video, the images coming out of milwaukee from the weekend absolutely stunning. it is hard to believe that type of violence and chaos is taking place in our city. all hands on deck kind of morning for the milwaukee police department. they say they were prepared for the possibility of a second night of unrest and that's exactly what happened. police officers and sheriff's deputies were on hand to keep the peace, but there were some confrontations. one person was hurt when someone opened fire near sherman and burleigh at 11:00 p.m. an armored vehicle was brought in to pull that shooting victim to safety. a couple hours later, news chopper 12 was in the air when someone set a car on fire. authorities rushed to the scene minutes later to put it out. all weekend long, the milwaukee police have been posting the updates about the situation on twitter. we have been checking twitter as well. the milwaukee police have not given numbers on the arrests or live in milwaukee, tim elliott
