so when you walk down the street, you don't get shot, which is what's happening now. >> gary tuckmanustin with african-american voters who have been watching trump's speech tonight. he joins me now. >> we're about 30 minutes away from the venue of where the speech is. we're with 20 african-americans here. actors, teachers, lawyers, mothers, fathers, volunteers, nine democrats, six republicans, nine independents. i want to ask you how many of you are supporting donald trump for president. we've got two people. how many are not supporting donald trump for president. most of the people are not. he just said a short time ago, i say this to the african-american community, give donald trump a chance. you are willing to give donald trump a chance. what is your name. >> marilyn jackson. >> you're a republican. >> i am. >> what do you think of the speech. >> i'm trying to hear it. so far it sounds like a traditional politician, but i'm still listening to some of the points that he's saying. >> he said i will be the greatest jobs president that god ever created, believe me. do you believe me.

gary tuckman talked to some people, there were other folks we spoke to as well about what they think he meant. they were quick to downplay. let's watch this. >> you know, you can kind of skew it in your way or another way or my way and somebody else's way, but i think it was just political banter that both of them, you know, will do. >> is this political banter? >> i mean, it's totally atypical conversation to happen at a political rally. it is safe to say. i mean, i think that we have to remember that donald trump has said in the past, oh, you know, if you see someone who's out there with tomatoes, knock the hell out of them and i'll pay your legal fees. he has said, do these things, and people have done them, acted in a violent way. and it's also the case that the joke he made, if it is a joke, is not an uncommon joke. people who are strong advocates of guns in the past say, if you're going to come take my guns, i'll fight you off. this is in line with rhetoric that is not uncommon but it is extremely for a presidential candidate to raise that in the way that he did and that's why
