am one of the historians we are in the heart of fredericksburg, virginia, on the rappahannock river. 150 years ago, this was the site of one of the bloodiest rattles in the civil war. almost 18,000 people got hurt here. it is also one of the most novel battles of the civil war. they saw things that never happened on a battlefield before. soldiers literally fought outside houses, block by block, street by street, through downtown fredericksburg. this was the first urban combat in all of north america. the other things that are very interesting and novel about the battle of fredericksburg is when the union army attempted to lay pontoon bridges across the rappahannock, they were stopped by confederate sharpshooters who held them at bay. in the course of that, the union army had to bombard the city to try to drive them out. it was unsuccessful. they had to put infantry in both and ferry them across the river and drive the confederates out. the pontoon bridges in 1852 would have been composed of numerous boats lined up with anchors above and below stream because the rappahannock would shi

we have a severe thunderstorm warning for madison and page and rappahannock and shenandoah counties until0. we also have a flash flood warning in effect for page county until 10:00. we say it over and over again don't try to cross a flooded street by car or by foot. this is headed off more to the northeast so headed toward washington about 7:48. heavy rain, hail and strong winds. that storm seems to have it automatic. so yellow weather alert tonight for flooding and the possibility of severe weather. flash flood watch until 3 a.m. severe thunderstorm watch is now over at 8:00. we still think they could issue a watch to the immediate metro area and critical times 8 p.m. to midnight. so 9:00 on our closer into loudoun county and fairfax and manassas and mclean and leesburg. 10:00s across the beltway the red very heavy rain. temperatures still around 80 but still heavy rain at 10:00 in silver spring, temperatures upper 70s. boom, by 11:30, most of the activity is out of the immediate metro which is good news. they will be intense when they roll through but i don't think they will hang around

this morning, police responded to a home on rappahannock street in warrenton. the homeowner's name is seth shaver. that's who called to report the shooting. police found another man dead inside the house. he had been shot. now investigators are still trying to determine if the homeowner who called them was the one who shot that man. right now, no charges have been filed. >>> and another woman has been attacked while using the washington old domestic indian trail in northern virginia. this latest incident happened around 6:30 this morning near value view avenue and south king street in leesburg. the victim of an off-duty sheriff's deputy. she told investigators she was jogging, and a man approached her armed with a box cutter. she was able to run away unharmed. police are still looking for that suspect. >>> they're also searching for two men who tried to sexually assault another woman on the trail last wednesday in sterling. allegedly came out of the woods and tried to grab her. they ran off thankfully when a bicyclist rode by. more at 5:00. >>> there's been a d
