the first time he heard the term asian-american was when stokely carmichael said it. it made me wonder, for each of you, when did you first hear the phrase asian-american, and what was your response at that time? >> the first organization i organized was called the oriental coalition. in 1968. then, i met a young woman from san francisco state who is with the asian-american political alliance. i said, damn, that sounds so much better.
