if you go to william frazeito's book, "grant and lee," he is a graduate here. it's a fantastic book. those photographs are taken of johnson hanging from the scaffolding. and then that image was made into a picture for "harper's weekly." it was a huge picture so it was in the public discourse. they weren't hiding it. one final point about this, it completely backfired for patrick. because what he discovered is -- one, i've looked at this very, very intensely. there's only one small article about this in the confederate papers. i thought the confederates would play this up everywhere. they didn't do it. some slaves who ran away from the confederate lines came to patrick and they said, when they had johnson on the scaffolding, that the confederates pointed across the lines and they said to the black slaves, to the laborers, this is what the yankees do to slaves. this is what they do to african-americans. and so patrick's attempt to try to send a message that would infiltrate the public discourse of the confederacy. didn't work at all. so there was some discussion
