smith, the santa clara county sheriff, has a clear opinion. she said this morning the state should adopt a new law increasing the sentencing of sex crimes. governor brown is considering a bill passed by the legislator earlier this week regarding prison sentences. it would create mandatory prison terms for people convict of sex offenses where the victim was unconscious. sheriff smith made a point to address reporters outside the jail this morning to support that legislation. >> i think that it should have been a state prison sentence. but that's why we're moving so quickly on getting the law changed and urging governor brown to sign the legislation that's on his desk now. >> governor brown has until september 30th to make a decision on the bill. he hasn't said whether he will sign it. critics of the legislation say the decision on when to put a sex offender in prison should be determined based on the threat they pose to society. while the santa clara county district attorney also weighed in saying this, we also received a statement, here's part of their statement that they released today. it says, if we had our way, brock turner would be in state prison serving a six-year se
