senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is following the clinton campaign. he is near clinton's home in chappaqua, new york. what is the latest, jeff? >> reporter: good morning. the very latest is hillary clinton is resting comfortably at home in chappaqua. i'm told she's talking to her advisers, preparing for her debate which is two weeks from tonight, and she's largely going about her business. but she is staying in her house. at this point, she was supposed to be on a plane flying to san francisco. then on to los angeles tomorrow for an economic speech that was being touted by her advisers and then off to nevada. but that three-day west coast swing totally canceled. she is here now resting. the campaign really is trying to recover from without question, the roughest weekend of the entire presidential cycle. you heard the clips you just played there. they know they did not handle this very well. the advisers and democrats close to the campaign i have talked to this morning acknowledge that pretty openly. some of them say they did not have enough information

jeff zeleny live from chappaqua, new york. clinton's health scare clearly putting the spotlight on both candidates' medical records. let's talk about that. i want to bring in cnn's chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta. you heard what jeff just said, her camp wants her to be fully ready for the debate two weeks from now. but she's conducting this teleconference from bed in her chappaqua home. is that the best avenue to take? >> i don't know if she will be in bed while doing this teleconference. i think the idea that she's not going to travel. this notion that she was told to get rest and sort of recover because she has this diagnosis of pneumonia, that advice was given on friday as we all know now. we didn't hear about it until yesterday. but i think the idea of flying across the country won't necessarily make the pneumonia worse but could make the symptoms worse. obviously that's what i think they are trying to avoid for her health and for her going forward. >> how serious is this? does pneumonia affect things like you

jeff zeleny. also today there were some not so favorable numbers for secretary clinton specifically when it comes to her favorability. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: those favorability number, john, for all of the times she's been in public life, a quarter century worth, "the washington post and abc news poll found 59% of americans have an unfavorable impression of her. it's clear that the drip, drip, drip of the campaign controversies from e-mails to the clinton foundation taking a toll on her. this race seems closer than it has before. she is just two points above donald trump and gary johnson 10%. when she's taken out she's six points a head of john. i can tell you that campaign officials know it is tightening and they know it is a tough race ahead and when labor day begin, that's why they're campaigning aggressively. >> some of that convention bounce has faded. jeff zeleny, thank you so much. >> a lot more ahead as we get ready to hear from donald trump. he has landed there and

let's bring in jeff zeleny. good morning. >> now, campaigns are run state by state. battleground state polls are important. but what this national poll is showing is really how tight this race is. likely versus registered voters, donald trump is leading ever so slightly among likely voters. that is the universe of voters who we expect to turn out. 45-43%. as you said, that is within the margin of error. look at the enthusiasm. this is something that concerns democrats, concerns the clinton campaign and gives the trump effort some positive news here. 58% of trump voters say they are unth enthusiastic to vote for him. only 46% of clinton voters are enthusiastic. this is a turnout issue. that is why we are seeing democrats across the board get out on the campaign trail, from obama to biden, trying to fire up democrats. there's also the gender gap. among women, donald trump is massively behind, some 15 points behind hillary clinton. but it is nearly reversed on men. trump versus hillary clinton, 22 point there is. that is key going forward. also white versus non-white vo

. >> senior correspondent jeff zeleny has been working his sources and joins us now. jeff, what have you learned? >> we doe know she was at the ground zero ceremony for 90 minutes or so. it was 82 degrees or so, very muggy. but her campaign says she knelt overheated and left. but it was the abrupt departure there. we have a statement from her campaign. let's take a look at that. he says this, secretary clinton attended the september 11th ceremony for an hour and 30 minutes this morning to pay her respects and greet the families of the fallingen. she felt overheated and is feeling much better. that's the only official word and statement from the clinton campaign. we saw her walking out of had her daughter's apartment in the flat iron district of manhattan a short time ago. she said she's feeling great. a reporter shouted a question to her, but she did not come over and answer any questions or explain what happened in her own words. e we know there have been questions from the other side, her critics from donald trump who says campaign rally after rally she's low energy

jeff zeleny joins us with details. jeff, you spoke with vice president running mate tim kaine, what did they say? >> tim kaine was in pittsburgh at a labor day rally. he said he is all in on this campaign. one of his central tasks there is taking the message to white working class voters. calling them out about what he says trup trump is misleading them but says both candidates have high disapproval ratings and he had advice for hillary clinton. >> why do people have suspicion about her? she has been in public life. she hasn't opened up or is it because of her own doing? >> i have a bad habit of saying what i believe and sometimes saying all i mean here. the truth is, hillary clinton knows it's a problem. and she is trying to figure out how to remedy it. my advice to her, the best way to remedy is, is to talk about what you care about. talk about it with passion. people will see through it. this will be, and you know better than i do, jeff, this could be the most negative campaign in the history of modern politics, i th

jeff zeleny is live in north carolina for us. jeff, what was the goal clinton had for the speech beyond reassuring people that she is healthy and will be able to continue running? >> well, jake, that was the goal first and foremost, just to show her supporters, show democrats that she in fact is okay. you can hear the music, as you talked about. james brown's "i feel good." that was picked, obviously, for a reason, to send that message. that was her message when she stepped onto the campaign plane a couple of hours ago, flying from her home in west chester county, new york, no greensboro. her aides are excited to have her start drawing a contrast with donald trump. a lot has changed in the week that she has been in a battleground state. that was last thursday here in north carolina as well. in fact, polls have tightened nationally. polls have tightened in individual battlegrounds, so she wants to start taking the fight to donald trump. she made clear saying i am not a showman like my rival is, calling out his appearance on dr. oz.
