here's part of a report from my colleague, richard engle, on yet another hack this summer. ♪ >> reportereven as hillary clinton took to the stage of the democratic convention, party officials were scrambling with a major security breach. they amy been hacked. investigators now say it was a cyberattack launched from russia. who are these hackers? >> basically they are come from the russia underground. >> reporter: this former hacker is now a leading expert on the russian hackers. they do services for the russian state, and in exchange they get protection? >> yeah. >> joining me now, msnbc terrorism analyst malcolm nance. why is russia so intent on hacking u.s. hackers? what ultimately is the end game, their goal? >> let's look at the two types of hacks. ones going on against the white house, the joint chiefs of staff, those are intelligence agency probes. they do that all the time. those are low-grade hacks. the hack on the dnc and dccc,

richard engle joins us from downtown.hing more about the investigation there in manhattan? >> reporter: we've learned a little bit more. the governor was just here. you played a clip from when he spoke to reporters. in addition to that deployment of 1,000 new york state police and national guard to protect mostly the transportation infrastructure -- subways, airports, buses -- he said there's no evidence that there was an ongoing threat. that's quite significant. you're seeing people back on the streets. there's not a real sense of concern here. but always when you find two devices, you will wonder, are there three, are there four, are there more. the governor saying no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat. the word "terrorism" is always a tricky one because when you plant a bomb in a crowded urban area and you don't know who could be hurt or killed, that is effectively an act of terrorism. but not one that they are saying is linked to any political group like isis or al qaeda or any of the other militant groups t

we get more from nbc's richard engle. >> reporter: born in afghanistan, ahmad khan rahami lived in elizabeth, new jersey, a working class, ethnically mixed city outside of new york. he graduated from edison high school. classmates say he didn't make much of an impression there. he went on to middlesex county college, studied criminal justice, but dropped out. the rahamis own a fried chicken restaurant. ahmad worked the fryer, according to moses karnub. >> when you say he looked mad, he just had an angry expression, or he was quick to get into fights or arguments? >> no, he just kind of had that face that he always looked mad. >> reporter: the restaurant was not popular with some neighbors who complained it was too loud, open too late. the police were often called in. the family filed a federal lawsuit five years ago, alleging they were being harassed. muslims make too much trouble in this country, they claimed they claimed in that lawsuit they were being persecuted because they were muslims. >> this lawsuit had nothing to do with ethnicity or anything to do with religion or religious beliefs
