so obama did not directly say american shining city on a hill, but he invoked that if they would be up to the pessimism he perceives in the trunk campaign and then hillary clinton says she affirmed that america is a city on a hill and it fascinates me the way this phrase, which never had to be attached to america, one of my favorite historian says everything could end the frame. there is no reason why city on a hill ever had to become attached to america any more than any other phrase, but it has proven durable. tired? yes. i think even the way it gets trotted out as a tagline i think shows whether we see this or not, shows that it is very weary as a phrase. it has become a clichÉ. it has become part of a war of words. it is something the riesling at each other in a political contest. he used to believe in a city on a hill. you don't believe the city on a hill anymore or maybe ted cruz turned republican campaign saying we used to be a city on a hill until barack obama and now we are no longer a city on a hill. though for me and we will again be the city on the hill. so it is a phrase t
