our top story this morning is hurricane matthew. we're in the weather center with meteorologist sally severson. sal, it is weakened over night. >> in fact, hurricane force winds are still in place at 120 miles per hour and gusts up to 150 miles per hour. the heavy is approaching the space coast, that is where cape canaveral is located. this is the space coast. keep in mind, this whole eastern edge of florida is coastal. now, we do anticipate the storm is continuing to skirt parallel to the coast. over the land to make a landfall. it continues to be a category 3. it is moving up, likely decreasing to a 2 and then to a 1 off the ghost of georgia and the carolinas. travel to the southeast is difficult for much of the weekend as we look at flooding rains. >> millions of people evacuated from florida's coast in recent days. >> others are huin the storm moves in. matthew weakened to a category three storm overnight. but there are still powerful winds and storm surges. let's check in with abc news' lauren lyster in volusia county, florida.

a look at hurricane matthew, max winds 110 miles per hour. as of the last advisory, it's downgraded to a category 2 hurricane, a strong category 2 hurricane. it's moving to the north at 12 miles per hour. it should be up near the georgia/south carolina coastline overnight tonight. that would be 2:00 a.m. saturday, possibly still as a category 2 hurricane. then it could be skimming the south carolina coast into saturday afternoon, downgrading potentially to a category 1. and then that's when we start to see it make the very sharp turn, starts to wind around and maybe even heads back towards the bahamas. but at that point it would be early next week and it would be weakening. we'll be watching that closely. the wind radius around the hurricane, red showing hurricane-force winds, the yellow tropical storm-force winds. we're looking at hurricane-force winds along the georgia coastline, south carolina coastline, maybe even towards wilmington by saturday night. that's going to depend on the tropical storm-force winds before it moves out to sea. futu

let's go down to sheena parveen to get the new information on hurricane matthew. >> the center of matthew as a category 4 hurricane is about to move in to freeport from the bahammas. a nice satellite look at the storm. there you see the eye of it and it is still a category 4. winds 140 miles an hour. it is quickly deteriorating conditions in florida all the way to the east or the west coast of florida, the tampa area seeing the rains and moving through. here is a better look at the storms swirling. there is freeport here. you see the center of it there. rain bands across the state of florida across to the gulf coast states. you see how large it is and how much of florida it is now impacting. look at what the buoys are reporting. 8 foot waves on the coast of florida. the east coast of florida. about 6-8 feet. wind gusts slightly offshore about 35 miles an hour. we are go to watch the storm continue to move to the north and the northwest. the center is about 100 miles from the coast of florida. those are all of the hurricane warnings that are up because hurricane conditions are expected. th

matthew current lism the 6:00 a.m. advisory, from the national hurricane center, does have matthew a category two hurricane strength that is 105 mile-an-hour winds, gusting to 125 miles an hour. and the center of circulation, so the eye of the storm, is still sitting offshore, right now, off the coast of georgia and south carolina, and the eye has kind of opened up a little but it is still a very dangerous storm. and it is already causing some heavy rain, across central north carolina, and you may be able to hear it on your roof and your windows outside right now. you can see some of the heavy showers, pushing through cumberland county, and sampson county and harnett county and johnsonton county, dealing with the showers. and the yellowings that you see popping up on the radar there. we will see a threat throughout the day today. because of that, we have a risk for flooding. a green, that is through 6:00 tomorrow evening and keep in mind, across the sand hills, we dealt with flooding very recently and with additional seven to nine inches of rain likely in some of these locations, this is the area that is most prone to t
