led is short for "light emitting diode." we've seen in traffic lights. the great thing about led bulbs is that, one, they are about 80% more energy efficient than incandescent or regular old-fashioned bulbs. they last really long, so about 20 years, but they do actually cost a little bit more. if it's cost prohibitive for you to replace all of the lightbulbs in your house with led bulbs, here's one way that you can save $70 by just doing one thing. replace five light fixtures that's in a really high fixture. this takes a lot of time to replace, and this bulb tends to frequently burn out. what i've got in here... is an old-fashioned cfl bulb-- compact fluorescent lightbulb. these used to be the most energy-efficient bulbs, but, over time, we've learned these are actually bad for you to have, because if i were to drop this, things like mercury would get all over the house. so i'm gonna take this one out and recycle it... and replace it with an led bulb. it doesn't emit heat. and 20 years from now is the next time i have to drag this ladder out and replace
