and when nancy had that photo. she had the joke kind of on them because they were wonderful musicians. and here is another picture, the only known picture of them with their of their captors, al g barnes. and once their mother got them back, a protracted legal battle to get them paid, you can see in the pictures that they have more agencies in their lives, they're happier so this is a casual back yard picture, that's what they called kind of back stage in the circus and you know, they had friends, they'd play music. there's accounts in my interview of people remember them playing music and the music gave them like this agency and power that music does. like any skill that we have. any, like writing makes me feel good when it's working and music made them feel good. and it gave them something to do and it gave them self-power, so-- >> and can you describe what their life was like in the circus before their mother got them and after? and explain how many years went by before she-- >> right. so i'm sure at least 13 ye

and nancy did a better job of that than i did. but i learned a lot from her, and i learned a lot from howard baker. he was my mentor. he was -- well, the majority in 1981, reagan swept us into the majority in the senate, in the house, and russell long had been chairman of the finance committee for 17 years. and suddenly i became chairman of the finance committee. and i remember once they called the roll, and he -- they always say you're the last one, mr. chairman. and he said, mr. chairman, and russell long voted. so i thought i was the chairman. but russell -- he was a wonderful guy, too. he had the right attitude. he knew we were sent there to do a job, not to call each other names or all that. and i want to thank the chancellor and the provost for all the help they've given the dole institute. which i think is an asset to ku.
