cnn pentagon correspondent barbara starr has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a very grim reminder that even when u.s. troops are not in direct combat, the war takes a very heavy toll on the u.s. military. earlier today in kabul, apparently an advise and assist team, not a combat team, was going to a base in kabul when they were attacked by an unknown assailant. one u.s. military member killed in action. one u.s. civilian also killed. in addition to that, one military member wounded and two additional civilians wounded. they are said to be in stable condition. the u.s. military and the coalition investigating exactly what happened, who the assailant might have been. according to reports, that assailant also later killed. these incidents have happened in the past. thankfully it's been awhile since there's been one. but this is a heavy toll on u.s. military families amidst all the politics when people are talking about combat and not being in combat, for u.s. troops overseas and the civilians who support them, a very grim day and very grim reminder of how tough t

let's bring in cnn pentagon correspondent barbara starr to discuss.he battle to retake mosul? >> reporter: assessing a whole battlefield in 140 characters on twitter may in fact not tell the whole picture. so the military revealed today, the u.s. military revealed that since the fighting began a couple weeks ago, they now have the iraqi forces have now reclaimed some 800 square kilometers moving through these villages around mosul as they begin to approach the city. has there been very tough fighting, yes. in some areas, there has been. but they are continuing to move. they expect to see more fighting by isis as they get closer to the city. here are some of the challenges they are facing. isis families and operatives are leaving mosul by all accounts towards the west. that's an area that isis still controls. the western flank outside of mosul. so that's an area they can get through. the u.s. already has plans to try and go after that problem. as the iraqi forces have been moving, they haven't been able to leave behind as much force to hold these villa

pentagon correspondent barbara starr has more.>> reporter: you could sort of see this one coming after days of political pressure from the veterans community, from the veterans impacted themselves and of course from the white house. the pentagon did step in today. defense secretary ash carter issuing a statement while traveling in europe just a short time ago saying that the pentagon for now will suspend this program to try and get these veterans, there's about 2,000 of them according to pentagon calculations, to pay back enlistment bonuses that the u.s. government says they improperly received. they were not due these re-enlistment bonuses. there has been a good deal of controversy about the pentagon's effort to get them to pay it back. what carter has done is said he's going to suspend the program to get the reimbursements for the time being. he's going to have a team of senior leaders look at all of this, figure out how to have some equitable program here and get it moving and get these cases resolved rapidly. here's what the s
