fox's amy lang is live in columbus, ohio, with the latest. amy? >> reporter: well, the police cars are no longer here in the area. we just left a candlelight vigil where people have come together to pray. folks are really shaken here on the campus of the ohio state university. many people just before 10:00 this morning getting an alert on their smartphones that there was an active shooter situation urging them to run, hide and fight. it concerned out it was a student, an 18-year-old somali refugee, taken his car, jumped the curb and gone into a crowd of people on the sidewalk. when people ran to his aide to see if he was okay he got a butcher knife out and started stap stabbing people. fortunately there was a campus police officer in the area on another issue that acted quickly and shot and killed the student by the name of abdul razak ali artan. now investigators are taking a look to determine what the motivation was, why in the world would he do sufficient a thing. >> the officer was on the scene in less than a minute. he ended the situation in
