david gregory, matt lewis, john berman, and in washington, we have maeve reston. it's great to have all of you here as we retrace our steps and try to figure out what happened last night. david, what do you think happened last night? >> a political earthquake happened. all across this country. something that was stunning. donald trump knew and understood something that voters in america that we in the media didn't understand. that the political class political republicans and democrats didn't understand and that the establishment at large didn't understand. he understood and harnessed the energy and movement that was tired of the political establishment and really wanted a new day. wanted something completely different. and we have the juxtaposition of someone who never served in office against the ultimate insider in hillary clinton. and the american people on crosslines, primarily, rendered a resounding judgment. a desire for radical change, despite a lack of confidence in his temperament or his qualifications. change is the order of the day. >> hey, maeve, let'

i think it leaves the voters saying maybe we don't have an answer to that. >> maeve? >> paul ryan has been out there this year with a superpack raising a ton of money to make sure these candidates make it back to washington. this is a big part of his legacy and his potential run in 2020. how he's tried to balance the whole trump thing. again, i think we are going to have to look at the margin on tuesday night. you know, the fact that this race tightened up has made it easier for paul ryan to get out there and campaign not only for the down ballot candidates, but lifting the entire ticket. so, paul ryan has a lot on the line. it will be interesting to hear what he says today. >> how much is his own viability, particularly if it continues to be a republican controlled congress. what kind of power influence will paul ryan have? >> that's the key here. the 15-20 seats in play for the republicans are all ryan allies. they are the moderates. if they lose their seats, his conference becomes more conservative and more difficult for him to wrangle. it's a smaller number of rep

. >> let's go to maeve reston joining me live ahead of this rally here as we wait for hillary clinton, take away from the ad using trump's own words. >> tough ad. >> yeah using his own words and also speaking to women, talk to me about the young woman who will be introducing her in florida in a moment. >> today clinton will be introduced by alicia machado who was the miss universe contestant who came out and talked about how donald trump had made fun of her weight gain and said other things she found to be derogatory and insulting. clearly what clinton is trying to do here after being on defense over the last couple days is shift the conversation back to donald trump and women as we just saw in that very tough ad right there. what clinton needs to do is get female voters excited. we're seeing a dip in enthusiasm in tracking polls for her campai campaign and that's what she's trying to do by having machado come out and introduce her in florida, which is where a state where clinton needs rally young millennials, latinos in particular so machado can help with that. >> maeve, thank you. l

maeve, i want to begin with you because when you were in the trenches you covered romney's presidential run and now we have the news, thank you, mark preston, that he'll be meeting with donald trump this weekend and talking even as much as a potential position in the cabinet. how do you read that? >> well, a position in the cabinet, some of the romney sources that i've talked to, say that may be like a little too premature of a step romney is magnanimous, he is someone who wants the country to get off on the right footing with a presidential transition team scrambling to fill the positions and there's no one who knows the process better than mitt romney. mike levitt who ran his transition team literally teamed up to write a book an how you do a presidential transition. they -- mitt romney was familiar with the names they were going through. the vast number of positions you have to fill and so i think that mitt romney can offer in that meeting not only names but guidance about how to approach this, how to vet people and i think that, you know, that will be the spirit of the meeting tomor

maeve, that's a crucial group. a lot of people who watched the election say they can't imagine being undecided yet we saw today at the poll stations our reporters are out, undecided voters and independent voters at the polls, and i want to get into specifics on polls but there were large numbers of independents and in some states that seemed beneficial for donald trump. >> and at certain points in the race they have skewed toward donald trump and at other points there have been younger latinos who are part of that group so it will be interesting to see what happens tonight and whether or not the millennials turn out and whether those independents, particularly in florida and other states like that are younger latinos and younger african-americans and whether they can pull hillary clinton across the line. >> and it's all about turnout. early voting, you had records in several states but that's done now. now it's who do you get to add to that or reverse it? >> and we spent time talking about candidates holding huge r

with us to share reporting and insights, maeve reston and manu raju, and malika henderson from cnn. first time hillary clinton below the finish line 268. they think they can get nevada. nevada gets them across the finish line. donald trump above 200. she is campaigning in traditional blue states. is it defensive or cautious? a mix of both? going back to michigan? going to be in pennsylvania. >> look, one of the defining gambles of the campaign for hillary clinton to treat a number of the states in her core 272 as essentially done deals for most of the campaign. in that original 272 you had, only, really, pennsylvania and new hampshire have they treated as true swing states. look at colorado, michigan, wisconsin, when you look at virginia, they have treated all of those as essentially done, while they've devoted enormous amounts of time and money to north carolina, florida and ohio. in particular. so now donald trump is kind of calling their hand on that, making a late push. still an uphill climb for him in the four states i mentioned. colorado, virginia, wisconsin, ohio, putting ads

historic sort of turnout of latino votes do spell good things for hillary clinton, my question to you, maeved donald trump, how would he have a path to victory? would he? >> i mean, it's just really difficult to see when you look at those numbers in nevada and florida and north carolina. although a cnn analysis we did of early voting showed that she was underperforming where president obama was a little bit in north carolina, so maybe he'll have an edge there. but this may be the year, everyone talks about the hispanic vote as being the sleeping giant. they have a much larger share of the eligible vote population than turn out. this may be the year that donald trump galvanized voters for hillary clinton. so -- >> is it because what donald trump when he descended the escalator and made those comments about mexicans? do you think that's what galvanized latinos in this country or more than that? >> i think it started at that moment but having gone to citizenship workshops and places where they're registering voters all year, it was -- it was just sort of a repeated series of assaults that peopl

[ laughter ] maria has been pushing on this thing for a long time but very few foresaw anything like the numbers that voted in florida in early voting and if latinos drive florida into hillary camp, it will be so crucial. they're very important in nevada, they're important in colorado, imp

. >> and maeve, here we are, you've got "the washington post" talking about the mindset of many post-electionparticularly if it is hillary clinton win of a piece talking about republicans now vowing total war, the consequences would be immense, the writer paul waldman saying this, quote, so now they are making it very clear that from literally the day hillary clinton is inaugurated they will wage total war on her. there will be no rule or norm or standard of decency. they won't flout if it gets them a step closer to destroying her, no matter what the collateral damage. is this fear in a different way on the campaign trail? >> it is. but i think that, you know, i think that we have to wait and see what happens on tuesday. you know, what potentially what the margin of the win is. i mean, i think that democrats do feel that they're under a sustained attack. you know, everything from the institutions of government, the fbi, to, you know, potentially keeping the supreme court tied into the near future. but i think that a lot of that could potentially change once we figure out what happens tuesday.

. >> maeve, you covered hillary clinton for a long time as well. you know how painful this is for her because you know how hard that staff for two years, how hard they have worked day and night. you see all those faces in the front row there, robby mook, you saw podesta, you saw jake sullivan, you saw so many of those, jennifer palmieri, they really worked nonstop. it's so sad, i'm sure, for her that she feels she's let them down. >> yeah. it's just so long coming to this moment. to have to do this again is just a remarkable thing that she's going to have to do. i do think that so many people last night, because the clinton campaign was so bullish about her chances, was expecting it to be this huge historic moment that would be -- that would go down in history and to pivot so quickly to a donald trump presidency, there's just so man people that are feeling whiplash this morning. >> whiplash indeed. go ahead. >> i was going to say dana and i were talking about this, that hillary clinton now twice has sort of been the person who has run for student b

maeve reston? >> it's not just democrats that are watching voter turnout tuesday night. a group of republicans in congress deeply committed to getting an immigration reform bill through congress. if there are, in fact, huge kind of anti-trump latino turnout tuesday night, that will provide some momentum to actually finally get a bill through congress. >> if they can talk to their conservative friends. good luck with that. jonathan? >> a few weeks ago it seemed like hillary might pull democrats with her into congress. if that does happen it probably won't be because of her but it may be because of the current president. after dragging down the party, president obama has almost made it his mission in the last weeks to not just help hillary but down ballot democrats. he is finally an asset after being a liability for much of the last eight years for his own party. i was with him in chapel hill last week. he was as impassioned going after richard burr as he was donald trump, almost ridiculing burr for supporting trump. and in miami this weekend i was riding around in an uber
