general petraeus, welcome to the nclc. gen. petraeus: congratulations on all you have done to bring this to fruition. thanks to all of you for being here on a frigid night in our nation's capital. congratulations on this terrific library. it is a special privilege to walk point for this effort, as we say, as the first speaker. as a huge admirer of the man, rightly described as the last line to be in a -- last lion. to be in a place inspired by him is quite special. michael: i thought we would begin by discussing your current activities with kkr, which i understand have taken you all over the world, although your travels were briefly interrupted by a trip of trump tower, i think a subject that everyone here will be very curious about. i am wondering if you could tell us what you are up to now and share a few details about the recent trip to new york. gen. petraeus: i will start with acrosskkr is literally fifth avenue, across the street from where trump tower is. i went and had a variety of exploratory conversations with folks.

>> i think general petraeus is a gifted man.ion would be wise to take advantage of those skillsets. i think the challenge that dave has right now, and i've known dave frankly for over 30-plus years, and i'm a very big fan of his skillsets. the challenge is that as you mentioned in your front piece there, joe, the challenge he has is he released classified information to a mistress, that is two significant ouches right there. and he has to deal with that. and the former presidential candidate hillary clinton when as secretary of state was accused of what i would call essentially gross negligence in handling of classified information. and in the narrative, it's too clear, it could be too contentious in the senate is dave was nomined and they were to -- obviously the senate would have to debate that. it would get personal on a nasty level and dave would have to muscle up and man up with that, and he would. i'm confident he would. but it would have to be a decision of the president-elect to go through the fight. but clearly, i think

what do you think general petraeus' role will be in this administration? >> only president-elect trump can tell you what general petraeus' role is going to be. i have an 11-year relationship with him. i know him personally. we socialize together. this is an absolutely brilliant man. in addition to being a four-star general, he has a ph.d. from the woodrow wilson school at princeton and i think there's nobody in the united states that understands the geopolitical system better than general petraeus that is currently active. we have henry kissinger for a moment due to his age. an active person that can serve the country. general petraeus understands our alliances and he understands the need to work with the secular muslims to help us defeat isis. general petraeus is a man who has the backbone that somebody like president-elect trump would love. he also has the administrative capability. let's say, for example, he's going to be the secretary of state. we have a problem in that department. we have $6 million missing from that department. i know the president-e

broadwell and petraeus admitted to an extramarital affair in 2012.roadwell was writing his biography, "all in." he pleaded guilty last year in federal court to unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents. he was fined $100,000 and remains on probation. broadwell was never criminally charged. >> do you think he should be allowed to serve in a top-level post in a trump administration? >> no, i think he's unequally qualified for many positions but that's not my position to say. i think the president-elect would have to decide and members of the senate. as i woke up to the news, you know, it was a bit of a shocker that he was being considered for a cabinet position. i was both shocked that i'm still in this tenuous position and yet happy because i think he should be able to go on with his life. he's earned it. and so should his family. but then it begged the question of why shouldn't i be able to go on? >> reporter: she served 21 years in the u.s. military. 13 years in the army reserve. after the affair she was demoted from lieutenant colo

general petraeus comes to us from germany this morning.ou for joining us, general petraeus, and you heard vice president-elect mike pence speaking about your service to this country and calling you an american hero. talked about your possibility of getting confirmed, as well. it appears that this is not disqualifying that your security clearance problems are not disqualifying to president-elect trump right now, but cnn is reporting that several republican senators are concerned about this confirmation battle. one said it is causing a high level of angst. what can you say to reassure them? >> first of all, good to be with you, george. what i would say to them is what i acknowledged for a number of years, five years ago i made a serious mistake. i acknowledged it and apologized for it and paid a very heavy price for it, and i've learned from it. and, again, they'll have to factor that in and also obviously 38 1/2 years of otherwise fairly in some cases unique service to our country in uniform and then at the cia and then some four years or s
