wanto get more perspective on what we're watching in the coming days with nbc meteorologist bonnie schneider. bonnie? >> well, richard, you can see where morgan's standing that the bulk of the moisture hasn't quite worked its way into wichita but it's coming straight from the panhandle of texas. we have reports of thunder along with freezing rain. the temperature sl 36 degrees. it will go down later on. we're seeing the numbers kind of teering around the freezing mark across the region. they'll go down as well as we continue through the afternoon. with cold air to the north and more moist air to the south, it does create a recipe and some circumstances for an ice storm. when that you have warm air overriding the colder air and the precipitation falls through it, eventually by the time it reaches the ground, it's cold enough to freeze. so it'll freeze on any surface whether it's your car or the ground itself. this is where we're looking at the biggest ice impact, western kansas and into oklahoma. we could see half an inch of ice accumulate. and keep in mind that when we're talking about that

let's bring in bonnie schneider. we just got the report from tammy leitner on the east coast. we have the west coast, they are are's expecting 4 or 5 inches in san francisco? >> flood watching are in effect. and this will be a long duration event because we're expecting more are rain for tomorrow and then a series of storms coming in next week. so notice in san francisco, airport cldelays 115 minutes. 6 hours earlier at jf complaik.. there is nowhere to go, so just a good saturday night to stay inside if you can. travel is treacherous particularly in and around the cape cod area where 18 inches of snow is possible going forward with blowing and terroridriftin. tropical moisture is coming up from the pacific. it triggers all acts coion comi through. but we're look at heavy rain up the coast and it will do a variety of things. producing very heavy rain, melting some of the snow pack bringing in the warm air. hard to understand that on the higher elevations. but i also want to point out the ice in oregon. we could see three quarters of an inch of ice accumulate. so this is treach

joining me now meteorologist bonnie schneider. gee, bonnie, how is it looking out there?t looks like we're getting hit on all sides. >> on the east coast it's looking better than yesterday. you saw the pictures of plymouth, mass, they had 19 inches of snow. east bridgewater, massachusetts, we also saw record-breaking snow into richmond and providence. notice behind the system, much colder temperatures and even though where you didn't get a slot of snow in atlanta, you have icy conditions. be careful driving out there. this is what's happening right now in the san francisco bay area. plenty of heavy rain. it's been raining there since late last night and we expect more of it and in sonoma county, in particular, we had a flash flood warning and i've been reading reports and not only do we have thunderstorm wind damage with trees down in san francisco and some of the roads are closed due to flooding, and what's happening now and we've heard of the water rescues and it's ramping up. we have this huge area of tropical moisture coming in and it's a plume of moisture known as an

for the latest on weather across the country, turning to bonnie schneider, how are we looking this morning? happy new year, by the way. >> happy new year, frances. we're looking chilly. the windchill is in the 20s and 30s. this will feel like nothing, feels like warm in the days to come. big changes ahead for a new year for 2017. the cold air is plunging into the northwest. and it is going to spread across the country. you willeel the difference outside this weekn boise, seattle and into wyoming, where temperatures will drop down to the single digits bit middle of the week. it spreads eastward, across parts of the midwest and plains, also your temperatures are going down. that will spread even further east by the end of the week. lots of rain across the southeast, heavy rain coming in now. atlanta, you're getting clouds and rain. but it is more substantial if you start heading to the central gulf coast. this is where we're watching for flooding. poteial for floong as we go into tonight. a lot of advisories continue straight into monday afternoon. for flooding in low lying areas and southea

joining me now, meteorologist bonnie schneider. so, bonnie, how's it looking out there? >> well, alex, we're getting the snowfall totals in, and we've had so many records shattered, like this one in providence. this goes back to 1977, almost 10 inches of snow. but it topped out in massachusetts at near 20. the storm is departing, but we could still see some snow bands. important to note, the arctic air coming in behind this storm. so, looking forward to the next few days, your high temperatures sunday and monday will be in the 20s in many areas, starting to warm up towards the middle of the week. it's already in the single digits and teens to the south. be careful out there. lots of ice, even where you didn't get a lot of snow. plenty of moisture coming into the west. this is a plume known as a atmospheric river because it's a steady flow of moisture. today will probably be the height of the storm. you can see all that rain, a couple inches already from yesterday. in san francisco we had two-hour airport delays. hopefully, we won't see that today. lots of rain into calif

let's bring in meteorologist bonnie schneider. good morning, bonnie. >> good morning, dara. boy, did we see a lot of flight cancellations and delays. looking at temperatures really cold behind the storm. waking up to frigid numbers in the teens and single digits. off to the west the temperature is not as much of an issue as moisture, plume of proper cal moisture coming in known as atmospheric river across pacific. rain is coming down in san francisco. it's going to accumulate to dangerous amounts because this storm actually has warmer air with it as well. as that comes over the snowpack, which is already so high we're looking at a risk for flooding. a big risk going forward monday straight through wednesday these storms will be in the news. another thing we're talking about is the snow. really, really high snowfall totals. 3 to 5 feet going up to high elevations mount shasta along sierra nevada. it might sound great for skiers but that's a lot of snow to get through even for an experienced driver. out west just moisture is piling on. dara. >> bonnie, thank you so much. hope

let's bring in msnbc meteorologist bonnie schneider. the storms creating major delays for people on the roads, but as we know as drew was telling us, airports in atlantic city one example here. folks aren't able to get in and out of there. >> no. we have two storms on each side of the country. both impacting air travel in a huge way. and of course ground stravl. you can see the delays in the northeast are huge. we're looking at some of them. newark, new jersey, 249 memberships. philadelphia 217 and out in san francisco also some big delays due to a western storm there. but look at the visibility. jfk the delays are now running six hours. this is where we're seeing snowfall rates rather of two to three inches per hour. so visibility less than a quarter of a mile. it's not over yet. we're still looking for the threat for blizzard conditions to persist across cape cod where we could get a total of 18 inches of snow. now, back behind the system where we've had lighter amounts of snow but sleet and freezing rain, be careful tonight. it's goi

joining me now, meteorologist bonnie schneider. >> good morning, dara.we start heading into the northeast, this storm is impacting so many. 36 million in the east and the southeast are under winter advisories of some kind, including a blizzard warning that goes straight through the evening all the way from southeast virginia, lower maryland, to southeastern massachusetts. let's take a look where the snow the falling right now into charlotte and raleigh and richmond. we have snow falling. more of a wintry mix to the south. not too much more snow expected across north carolina. maybe some ice mixing in. notice new york city 2 to 4 inches so that might be more than you were originally expecting. some of the heaviest snow is working its way from montauk to nantucket. we've got conditions there 18 inches. so we could see potentially a foot of snow into eastern sections of long island all the way to the cape and the islands out towards massachusetts. and expect that wintry weather with blowing and drifting snow to be really problematic going into the afternoon

joining me now, bonnie schneider. good morning. it's crazy out there. >> and this storm will ramp up today and tonight and into sunday morning. for kansas, this event will ramp up this afternoon and the evening. let's take a look. the main threat oklahoma and kansas today, downed trees and power lines and of course the very slick roadways. the freezing rain will mnuchin to the north on sunday, significant icing. this could be a crucial situation for days across parts of oklahoma and kansas. by monday, the snow and ice works its way toward the upper midwest and the threat will diminish in the afternoon. so three days of this. temperatures in the 20s in oklahoma city, tulsa just below freezing. and we're really he seeing temperatures at different levels of the atmosphere and that's why we're seeing the ice. we have warm moist air coming up from the golf. cold arctic air collides and what happens is the warm air overrides the colder air an eventually when the rain comes down, the air stays warm in the middle of the atmosphere. but kee

meteorologist bonnie schneider, as blake was saying we're still in two days of what is expected to be a three-day forecast. >> later today and tonight we'll see that ice peak into kansas city and oklahoma, so it's really just beginning. look at all the people under advisories. over 26 million americans facing a freezing rain advisory or ice storm warning. oklahoma and kansas but of course the downed trees and power lines means we could see outages lasting a long time with significant icing. that is all is moving to the north. for monday we'll be talking about nebraska, all the way into parts of the midwest facing freeng rain. let's get to what's happening right now. 28 degrees in wichita, kansas. temperature makes all the difference, and not just at the surface of the earth but all the different levels into the atmosphere where you have warm air kind of in the middle. unfortunately, it could lead to freezing rain because the ground is still very cold, so while the warm air overrides the colder air, as soon as it hits the surface, that rain freezes and we get a glaze of ice. how thick

for the latest on the weather, let's turn to bonnie schneider. >> happy new year.ttle right now. we have light snow falling into parts of oregon. unusual, causing some airport delays by 33 minutes in seattle. that snow will start to subside. the cold air, that's not going anywhere. it's dropping down. it will spread across the country from west to east as we go through the week. look at the numbers for the first few days of the year. boise, highs in the teens. this is the beginning. all of this cold will work its way even further east ande will feel it into the northern plains where snow is anticipated. winter storm warnings in affect that will go into tomorrow. watch for heavy acouple layikua. minneapolis, ice there. be careful driving. watch for black ice across this region into the early hours. rain across the south. it's making for dangerous situations in terms of the flood risk. in southern mississippi and the southeast parishes of louisiana, we do have a flood watch. that will again bring that chance for flooding, we're expecting one to maybe three to five in

for the latest we turn to bonnie schneider. lot of people traveling back home to work or school after the long holiday. >> the wet weather for the first day of the year in the south is causing problems, especially for travellers. the rain in southern georgia, overcast skies in atlanta. then rain back out towards louisiana and into mississippi. we're watching out for the risk for flooding. this is going to occur through the afternoon today into monday. we will see that threat with all the heavy rain and thunderstorms working their way up to georgia. no delays in atlanta. we did have 30 minute delays at the airport a moment ago. seattle, your airport delays are at 33 minutes. you may be wondering, why do we have delays? it's snow. that's right. two inches of snow and snowing in seattle. very unusual. the last time it snowed on new year's day in seattle, 2004. we went back to get that. the snow is coming in. what we really have a lot of cold air. as that cold drops down, not just the pacific northwest will be impacted but so many

here with more details is meteorologist bonny schneider. what can you tell us?i can tell you that new yorkers are saying, wait a minute we're getting all the snow. we're expecting four to aikt inch inches of snow. 18 states, 67 million people impacted by a storm system. it's snowing in richmond, virginia into raleigh and charlotte. a lot of the snow is pulling out. the temperatures are so brutally cold you'll feel the snow and ice and deal with it for quite a while. winston salem, four inches of snow. this part of the snow we saw higher amounts to the west. as we start going through the next 12 hours things are changing. you'll see more snow the further east you go. plymouth mass, this is we're seeing big amounts of snow. two feet. a big snowmaker. visibility is so poor right now from bridgewater to bridgeport, new york city, we have snowfall rates an inch an hour. this is not a good time to travel. i would say stay indoors and watch the snow. i'm glad this is happening on a weekend. hopefully most people don't have to b working. 24 degrees in raleigh where we'v

joining me is bonnie schneider. it seems we're certainly in the thick of this. >>> we sure are. people under an advisory, at least 24 million when you talk about freezing rain or an ice storm warning. let's break it down what we can expect today. the main threat oklahoma and kansas. look for downed trees and power lines. only a quarter inch of ice can do that. the freezing rain on the move, significant icing is possible for western oklahoma and into western kansas especially in the dodge city area where we're likely to see some heavy ice accumulation and it could be a significant storm compared to others. by mon dap the snow and ice pushes into the upper midwest so we're not just looking at this as a plains event. i added highways for those of you driving, some of the improvements and not so great weather. you can see frozen precipitation coming through in and around amarillo and what's interesting is we're getting reports of thunder so you have thunder and freezing rain, like a thunder ice versus a thunder snow or a thunderstorm. that's what's happening in amarillo. be careful.

joining me now meteorologist bonny schneider, at least it looks like in some areas people are staying inside. >> they need to stay inside. that's advisable. the national weather service put out a statement saying the snow is so bad, visibility is a quarter of a mile. you can see the heavy snow continues to work its way through much of the region. in terms of what we can expect through sunday, we'll be watching for snow ending in north carolina with an ice threat remaining. look what's to come. east end of long island, a foot of snow. a foot of snow in boston, massachusetts. a lot of snow coming through. here's the poor visibility. you can see the snow coming up and it is not relenting. this is going to be a rough day. i do not advise travel at all. behind this system, much colder air coming in. as the temperatures plummet, even though we only got a little bit of snow in atlanta, but further to the north, about 30 miles more measurable snow. the temperatures are below freezing and going down. this will be anniz an icy mess. anywhere we've had that glaze. switching gears to the west coa

msnbc meteorologist bonnie schneider is keeping an eye on the storm. i grew up in wichita, kansas.ks are still out driving. it's a busy saturday afternoon for a lot of people. >> i'm glad we're starting there because looking over the next few hours we do have more fre e freezing rain coming in so even though there are waves of the ra coming in, it means maybe you get a eaer. it's not over yet. so as we look at this and to the future you can see we have plenty of freezing rain working its way into the overnight period into kansas city as well. that's something we're watching very, very closely. and the rain is well behind it. that's coming into chicago. this is a three-day event. taking a closer look at the highways impacted where we've had multiple reports of accidents and freezing rain from oklahoma all the way to missouri, you can see on i-44, 244, and into 35 we're getting freezing rain. much of it is light in terms of intensity but it adds up and that is why we have about 24 million people that are under either a freezing rain advisory or an ice storm warning you across the cou

joining me for the big picture, meteorologist bonnie schneider. obviously two days into this, it won't be easing up for the folks out there anytime soon. >> no. of course it would be worse if we have strong winds but we have enough ice i'm confident we'll see these widespread power outages lasting for days in the worst hit arias which is kansas and oklahoma, and that is going to continue into the evening hours. we have light freezing rain in many locations including oklahoma. the temperature right around the freezing mark and to the north and west in the 20s. quite a contrast, two air masses, warm, moist air coming up from the gulf of mexico, and you have cold arctic air. we've seen this before. what happens when that warm air override the colder air? them we have precipitation. well, if the ground is cold enough at the surface, once it hits anything, that water becomes ice and that's exactly what we're seeing here and what we're going to see through the weekend escalating into saturday night and early sunday. now, looking across the country, this

to find out what's in store, we turn to msnbc meteorologist bonnie schneider with the big picture.s i was saying, not going to get any better anytime soon. >> not anytime soon but it will eventually. typically ice storms are long lasting events and this one's interesting because we don't have powerful wind, which is a good thing, but we have waves of freezing rain coming in and warmer temperatures, to be expected during the day, but we're also looking at that threat for ice. we're watching for freezing rain and ice, particularly right here into western oklahoma and into western kansas. this is where it's likely to accumulate. and if that's not enough, on sunday, we're looking for severe weather in texas where we could see very strong thunderstorms. we're seeing that right now in amarillo, where not only are we getting thunderstorms but we're getting ice so it's a thunder/ice combination, unusual, but it's happening right now. look at all the people under these advisories, freezing rain or ice storm, over 24 million americans. breaking things down as we go through the rest of the da

join meganow, meteorologist bonnie schneider. good morning. what can you tell us?good morning, dara. the governor advises stay home, good advice if you live in georgia, alabama, north carolina, any of the areas here, into virginia, where we're watching for some of the heaviest snowfall totals even into southern maryland. this is where we have a blizzard warning in effect. the slow is changing over sleet and some freezing rain in raleigh, not too much an accumulation in raleigh, but with what a gradient for the storm. you had just 25 miles north and west. you'll get a lot more snow in so many places, but that changes once you start looking to the east. the gradient we're talking about not existing on the east, kind of in the other way. further east, t more snow you get. updated recast tals anticipated like montauk, long island, islip, a little further inland, likely to see a foot of snow from this storm system and several inches in nassau county, even several inches, possibly up to 6 at jfk, 3 to 4, new york city. look at boston. a foot of snow expected. on the high
