rescue in southern california where firefighters responded to this car stuck in a flooded wash east of l.a. they used a raft to reach the people trapped inside. wash areas flood when it rains particularly hard. the driver of the car tried to keep going. everyone made it out of the car safely. the area is also getting very hard by the storms this weekend. >> i tell you if we learned anything from the storms, if you see the flood water you don't know how deep it is. >> stay away. we do see people who do. >> and even where the water is really high, and then people drive through it, it creates a wake in homes. it makes the situation worse where we do have standing water and that is definitely a possibility over the next 24 hours until this storm system winds down. here's a live look at san jose. it's still wet. we have had quite a bit of rain here and more in san francisco. a nice clear visibility but chilly. only 49 degrees in emeryville, the road is wet and the drivers making it okay. and you do have to slow it down to reduce the risk of hydroplaning. and where we see the greens and yellows

east. that system is now causing a big mess for southern california. snow shutting down lanes on the grapevine on interstate 5. heavier showers moving into l.a. that system continues to slide off to the south and east of the bay area. temperatures tonight will be in the 30s and 40s. tomorrow we'll see highs in the mid-50s. unlike today, where the day started off with a few showers, tomorrow the day will end with increasing chances of showers. highs in the mid-50s around san jose towards pleasanton. low 50s, concord and antioch, you'll see numbers in the low 50s to the peninsula, to san francisco and the north bay starting off the new year with temperatures running pretty chilly for highs. low 50s, scattered showers developing as we go through the day. between now and tuesday morning, rain totals expected to be less than a half inch for most of the bay area, higher totals towards the north coast and the sierra where they could get a foot or two of snow by tuesday. cold air and chilly showers coming on in. some of the heavier showers will have the ability to temporarily drop snow levels down close to 2,000 feet for parts of the north bay. this m

east. it is now making a mess of new year's eve plans, l.a. into san diego. tonight we will see temperatures dropping into the 30s and the low 40st. numbers in the mid 50s with increasing clouds, and by the end of the day, a chance of seeing a few showers in the north bay and the peninsula. same as we get into san francisco. we'll see mostly cloudy skies and probably between now and early tuesday, a quarter to a half inch of rain for parts of the bay area. this stormy set up will bring action to the north and east, look at the accumulating snowfall. mt. hamilton may get a little dusting, so increasing clouds through the day tomorrow. scattered showers as we go into saturday night and monday, and that is the window of opportunity. we have color coded the areas that will be close to freezing. close to two to three thousand feet, then you see the colder hair get pushed out of there. so freezing temperatures no longer in the seven day forecast. it will bring in more rain after we briefly see a chance of snow levels. temperatures midweek are trending more wild. >>

l.a. on your monday and 7 degrees in vancouver as well as seattle and across the east. rainy weather in the u.s. capitol on your monday. and let's go to japan. heavy snow and strong winds are still effecting the northern portions of japan as well as parts of the w west and that caused very hazardous conditions and also traffic disruptions. we have some video from the airport in the region. a winter storm is causing heavy snowfall in northwestern portions of japan continuously and 50 centimeters on sunday but 140 flights were cancelled on sunday due to heavy snow but 400 passengegers were stranded in t airport from sunday to monday morning and still more snow to come and, in fact, the heaviest snowfall fell in the west about 80 centimeters has fallen over the past 24 hours and more snow is on the way. we're still looking at quite cold air coming in from the continent and it's 80 centimemer snowow that could fall into you tuesday morning and up to 70 centntimeters andnd en overr th west cldld see upwards of 60 centimeters of snowfall and more snow is expected into your tu

l.a. but then as we get a closer look at what's happening in the bay area, abnormally dry conditions. we have been downgraded from severe drought from east bay and south bay to abnormally dry. a major improvement here. no drought for fairfield, santa rosa, san francisco, and the santa cruz mountains. they have been removed from the drought. as we look farther down, more wet weather system moving in. possibly more heavy rain from tuesday into thursday. so enjoy this break while it lasts. temperatures reaching into the low 50s. cooler air moving in. then it warms up into early next week. sunday and monday. the next storm system moving in on tuesday into wednesday. we'll be keeping tabs on all of this. also mike is getting a view of what's happening on the roadways. >> allow yourself a little extra stopping distance in front of you. look at that. the south bay. the rain really hitting highway 17, 85, 101, 280. all the roads through san jose. we saw the heavy rain move through. so ponding and puddling. we're showing you closure on 880 and mission boulevard. we are now seeing the backup on the approach. the connector toward 680 closed because

east bay 50 degrees. here's a quick check of doppler radar. that system is finally away from the coast line and it is gone. but down in l.a. this is the same system that has brought several showers down there as well. unfortunately southern california is still expecting a chance of thunderstorms today. and a few scattered showers. but here for the bay area, we are all for the most part in the clear, still seeing a couple but mostly sunny skies. however, we are still seeing a little bit of that instability up the coast which is why the national weather service did reissue a high surf advisory that will remain in effect until 4:00 p.m. tonight just to play it safe, i would say not the best beach day just yet. but you will have another chance and definitely a good chance for this weekend to head to the beach. here is a quick check of the water update. santa rose a 194% of normal. oakland 149. san francisco 151% of normal. these three storms have made for very impressive rain totals just in the past week alone. now, our highs for today will remain in those 50s across the bay area. morgan hill a high of about 53. san jose toppi
