it's interesting that phrase northern powerhouse is a phrase associated with george osborne, the conservativewas wrong, in my view. we had regional development agencies. we now have local enterprise partnerships. in the case of our agencies, we put a shed load of money into the regions, but we didn't create the point of decision making fun of accountability, that i think local enterprise partnerships... that the northern powerhouse is trying to do. we had money, but we didn't have local power, accountability, and i think they are important. another potential mistake, did you try to send too many people to university? absolutely not. now it is more about skills and vocational skills, rather than degrees? no. we were absolutely right to widen opportunities for those that wanted to go to universities, not just straight from school but from colleges, further education, following different routes into university. what we now need to do is to create the equivalent excellence in the technical education, the skill raising, that we create for the other 50%. that is what i would like to see happen now.
