representative jerry nadler said dozens were detained because of the order signed at noon yesterday. one person has since been released so far. nbc news correspondence anne thompson has been covering the story live at jfk's new york airport. anne, what are you hearing? >> reporter: hi, richard. take a look behind me. you'll see the protests behind the extreme vetting order irked by president donald trump. it's grown to a couple hundred people in the just the last two hour. dozens of people have been detained here at jfk because of extreme vetting order. one of them has been released, ham immediate darweesh walked out to meet this family. he was detained at jfk for 18 hours. we understand from the white house he was released and allowed to come into this country because a waiver was issued to that executive order the president signed yesterday afternoon. there is also another iraqi man who is being detained here at jfk. he is married to an iraqi woman who is in this country. although worked for the u.s. government, he, too, apparently is in the process of getting one of those waivers.

representative jerry nadler went to meet with the refugees at the airport. now they've told nbc news, it's unclear why one was released and the others are still being held. they could be transferred to a detention center in new jersey to meet with immigration attorneys. the aclu has filed a lawsuit, challenging president trump's muslim ban. one of the people detained at jfk is a graduate student studying anthropology at stanford. the student was detained for five hours and released. she is a u.s. resident with a green card. the department of homeland security says even people with that status are being detained. she was on a flight from sudan to new york. >>> well, the refugee ban protest continues to explode at major airports all over the country. there is this. president trump spent part of his day today calling world leaders on the phone, including russian president, vladimir putin. in his statement, the white house says that this call with putin lasted about an hour, and that the two presidents talked about a wide range of topics, from defeating isis to

it's interesting because congressman jerry nadler is there. it looks like maybe there is even some protests behind you. get us a sense of what happening on the scene. this is really the chaos that resulting about 24 hours after the executive order was in place. there are a lot of questions as to who was loud and who wasn't. a lot of clarity that was needed. there are hundred protesters outside jfk airport precisely because of what you said. essentially you have to i recommend who landed here last night who were immediately detained. two of them according to their lawyers into other rights groups who have a special immigrant visa. they artie had them. they were on their way into the united states. they were detained. nadler said ten others are being held here today. as to one of those. the man who was released he is 53 years old. a contractor for the u.s. military in iraq from 2003 to 2013. he was released this morning after other groups filed a federal lawsuit in court to day. the other man who is now currently being held his name was there. h
