that's where mcdonald's really began in the desert of california. >> they were the mcdonald brothers, right? dick and mack. >> ironically no. >> host: so that was the very beginning and it became quite popular. they became wealthy for that day didn't they? >> guest: they were working as hard as anybody who works in a restaurant business does, which is very. they each split the shifts. they worked until 11:00 p.m. they felt really lucky because they are able to buy new cadillacs every year. that was their idea of success. they're able to able to upgrade their cadillac every year. neither was married or had kids. they live together in a house they bought on the hill. they were happy. they worked hard but were happy with what they are making. about $100,000 per your profit. life was good. spee-01 that was in the early 50s that was a lot of money. >> guest: lots of money. >> host: they did do some franchising of sorts. >> guest: the trade magazine brought about the speedy system they had. they put the hamburger on the assembly line. they figured out a way in a very small space to remove t

mcdonald's had done well beyond his wildest imagination. he was a celebrated businessman at a time, you know now we have celebrity ceos and they are still interesting but back then the ceo would the so media savvy and friendly and was very unusual and he was a prey to horatio alger becoming a multi-multimillionaire selling hamburgers. it was just a fantastic story. there were a lot of people who were very dubious about this business succeeding and it didn't seem to make any sense. it's so obvious to us but back in the 50s wall street and particular was extremely dismisses up this idea -- dismissive of this idea. he was extremely happy, ray was and they landed in chicago which is where he had started and where he lived his whole life but joan quickly discovered that ray was a difficult and complex was person which he may have been aware of over the years but she recognized the ray had a serious problem with drinking and it was only two years after they married that she did file for divorce. and then almost as quickly as she filed her divorce
