host: why did you pick the university of virginia for medical school? mother didell, my die. i stayed with her until the february. i took a leave of absence from school. and we were a very close family. i do not have any brothers or sisters. my father and mother both came from large families. but i did have -- but i didn't have brothers and sisters myself. fatherer's death hit my and myself very hard. i knew a little bit about the university of virginia, but i knew it as a segregated facility. my grandfather had been a patient there when i was in elementary school, but i can still in my mind visualize the blackboard at the university of virginia at the old hospital, but i knew it was good in that if youa place wanted good medical care, you would hope you would go there to help. i knew it was a great institution. and it would be close to home. time, ilied and by that did have the experience of knowing what was happening in virginia because that is when integration was beginning to take place, and still not completely and placed by the time i went back to medical school, but it

the university of virginia did not accept women into any college except nursing and education until 1970. a lot of women thought that was to stopso the idea was gender discrimination in school. ask how did that start? how did women and individuals and groups start using title ix? with the woman considered to be the godfather of title ix. she wanted a full-time tenure-track edition. in 1979, there were lots of those jobs. she interviewed him at the not get called back and ask a friend and colleague who is a faculty member what she had done wrong and she said you come on too strong for a woman. she was frustrated by that. she went home talk to her husband. he said it was sex discrimination and she lyndon johnson signed an executive order in 1968 prohibiting federal contractors rum discriminating against women. she took that information and began working with congresswoman, particularly martha griffith and edith green. held a series of hearings outlining the problem and came up with title ix, this 37 word law. the idea was to arrest -- to amend the civil rights act of 19 64 and to include t
