cnn's ivan watson is live in seoul, south korea, with more. ivan, what do we know? reporter: okay, this is a professor by the name of tony kim, chris. he had been teaching for several weeks at the pyongyang university of science and technology. he was on the way out of the country leaving saturday morning from pyongyang international airport and that is when the north koreans grabbed him. we don't know why and we don't know the charges they may press against him. once the north koreans do this, judging by past behavior and trends, it is very, very serious. the other two americans that are currently in custody are university of virginia student named otto warmbier and another man named kim dung khu. they face either 10 or 15 years of hard labor. there have been other americans and foreigners who have been snatched in the last couple of years. almost always from pyongyang airport and at the very least, they usually face weeks if not months in north korean custody. when they have been released, they had to make a videotape con investigation or apology. we are following

our senior international correspondent ivan watson is in seoul and michelle is at the state department. any sense of why essentially the trump team is giving the silent treatment to north korea at this point? >> that is the question today. it is obviously open to interpretation. we have heard nothing from the state department in terms of clarification. i think as soon as that statement went out, we knew to expect it. we knew it was coming. but i don't think anybody expected 23 words and phrased the way it was. i think, you know, the interpretation could be, well, are they saying that the time for words is over and now is the time for action? are they saying, you know, we're going to have to wait on this and just be quiet for a while? so of course you turn to the state department and ask what did you mean by this exactly? and what we're hearing from officials is they are letting that statement stand. they're offering no clarification on it. now, today we may hear much more and we're going to hear from the president in this press conference, of course, with the jor dane yan king this aft

let's bring in senior international correspondent ivan watson who joins us from seoul. what are you learning about this latest provocation from north korea? >> reporter: the missile was launched, poppy, shortly after dawn here on the korean peninsula from the eastern coast of north korea. it was identified as a medium-range ballistic missile launched from land with a very unusual trajectory going very, very high to an altitude of some 117 miles, but traveling 37 miles before crashing into the sea. now the timing of this is very interesting because the first time this kind of missile has ever been launched, as far as we understand was in mid-february when president trump was in mar-a-lago at his resort meeting with the japanese prime minister. that's when the first time this kn-15 missile was launched and now this launch taking place a day before trump is to sit down for the very first time to meet the chinese leader xi jinping also in mar-a-lago. what do we know about the missile? it's another sign that north korea's missile technology is improving. it uses solid fuel u

cnn senior international correspondent ivan watson is joining us now. what do we know about this u.s. citizen and the -- why he was arrested? >> reporter: good morning. i have to preface saying we haven't independently concerned with at cnn. it's being reported by a new agency out of south korea. according to that news agency the detention took place on friday night at pyongyang international report and the man with the sir nim kim which is common here in korea was detained. we don't know the reason why. according to this report, he is an academic. a former professor at a university in china that is a university of science and technology. have not been able to confirm neither with the u.s. state department or with south korean intelligence. there are two others that are currently being held that we know of. one of them is otto warmbeard, a student from the university of virginia he was detained in 2016 at the airport and held since then and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after he confessed to trying to take down a political sign out of his hotel. a
