"on tyranny" by timothy snyder. he's spent his life studying the dictatorships of the country.rld seeing warning signs that remind him of the 1920s and '30s when this caused the collapse of western democracies. he provides 20 lessons from the 20th century to prevent history from repeating itself. >>> now for the last look. president trump rolled out a new executive order this week to roll back obama era rules that come bad pollution and climate change. this comes after a previous order that could strip regulations protecting smaller rivers and streams. at the same time i read about two other nations that are actively trying to protect their own waterways but in unusual ways. let me explain. the river in the north island of new zealand was unusually granted an unusual status, that of a human being. that's right, the government declared the river, one of the indigenous rivers that people consider sacred would be given the same rights, duties and liabilities of a legal person. 7,000 miles away this week two more rivers received a similar distinction. the ghangis river and the yeme

in the book on tyranny, yell history professor timothy snyder argued that democracy is fragile. it has evolved into fascism before. the passive consent of those who go on to get along, to defend democracy, he argues that we must defend institutions. institutions like the press, the courts, the congress. i do not say this to be an alarmist. we are standing on a precipice. i'm concerned about the integrity of this institution. during watergate, congress strongly investigated -- many members slandered the irs in order to impeach its commissioner. they continued to keep trump's tax returns hidden. party politics over country may have caused this to trump's campaign officials to collude with a foreign adversary in the name of hurting who they deemed to be there common enemy -- their common enemy. just think about that, do my colleagues have the courage to put their country first? or will we continue to hide the president's secrets, bury our heads in the sand, vanderbilt said what do i have to worry about the law? i have the power. our constitution and our country is paramount here. w

timothy snyder is that professor of history at yale university. he was a scholar. he is the author of the acclaimed blood lands between hitler and stalin and black earth. somehow the cords will save us and that the very institutions, they will somehow save as in that regard, the analogy, perhaps not as directly applicable as the fear. >> let me say why historical examples are useful. it's not america 2017 is like 1932, that's not the point. the point is general democracy fails. when the founders drip institutions where they did, which i generally agree with, they did so in part because they were fully aware that greek democracy-- they were fully aware that the ancient republic became an empire and this is what they were trying to prevent. we now have a lot more evidence than the founders of did in the method i'm trying to apply in this book is to emulate them with reference to this additional evidence that we have i don't look at this as that our institutions are so fantastic. i look at this as a historian of europe or going back-and-forth the last week of years. i
