nbc's garrett hake is live in boseman, montana, where people are waking up to the news. garrett, good morning. >> reporter: early last night, you missed what's going to be the weirdest political story after 2017 after we saw 2016 taking the cake. greg gianforte the republican candidate who had been favored to win this seat until he was accused of assaulting a reporter a day and a half ago did, indeed, manage to hold on and claim montana's only congressional seat for the republican party last night. the race was closer than a lot of people expected. it sounds like it's going to be about 7% when all the votes were counted. last night at the victory party we heard something we don't typically hear, a little bit of contrition and apology. take a listen. >> last night i learned a i need to share something from my heart here, and i just ask you to bear with me. and when you make a mistake, you have to own up to it. that's the montana way. >> reporter: that doesn't quite make gianforte's political problems go away. before he is seated in congress, the earliest that can happen i
