jason carroll is at white house. joins us now.he white house saying about the vote tomorrow? >> the white house is feeling optimistic. at least at this point much the president and the vice-president making a lot of calls on this. the real turning point at least symbolically or otherwise seems to really rest on the conversation that the president had with two people, fred upton and billy long. these two representatives were no votes. real no votes until the president was able to have a meeting with them. they were able to talk, talk about this $8 billion amendment to help cover people with pre-existing conditions. that was in some ways and to many people a real turning point. anderson, the president's supporters say if this goes through, the president really deserves a lot of credit on this one. the administration saying the president today, all week, all night has been doing what he does best, and that's negotiate. >> the president talked about this in the beginning, that he wants to work with members to make it the strongest pos

jason carroll reporting for us from new jersey, thank you. let's find out more about the next steps now for the health care bill. cnn's mj lee has more on that. and mj, this bill still has an uphill climb to say the least, in the senate. >> reporter: yeah, not just an uphill climb, a long uphill climb at that. here's the state of play right now. the house bill that passed yesterday now heads over to the senate. this is congress 101. for any bill to become law, it, of course, has to be approved by both the house and the senate. the problem, though, right now is that senate republicans have already basically indicated that they are going to reject the house bill in its current form, and that is why they have already set up a working group of sorts that includes conservative republican senators as well as moderate ones, to try to figure out what kind of bill do we want in the senate. now, the budget reconciliation process mandates that senators have to be very conscious of whether or not everything in their bill complies with the byrd rule. so t

we have cnn national correspondent jason carroll. he is in new jersey with president trump. and cnn money senior writer tammy is in new york. phil, let's start with you. what is the first step now for senate republicans? >> find consensus. that seems simple. the same ideological divisions we saw play out in such a manner over here in the house exist in the senate but with a much slamsla slimmer margin for error. they've made clear they're going to rewrite portions of the bill. if you look what's happening. senators have formed a working group. 13 republican senators really spanning the ideological spectrum of the conference to try to figure out a path forward. they know they can't take something to the floor without really knowing where their votes are. what they're going to look to change, think about the core of everything we've been discussing over the course of the last six weeks, the medicaid eck panxpan even the house decision to defund planned parenthood. all of those issues are on the table. whatever the senate brings forth and as you know this is going to take time
