let's go right to john roberts. digesting this breaking story coming out. >> coming from "the new york times" which says it has a memo from jim comey that was written after an oval office meeting that he had with the president back in february. apparently there were a number of people in the oval office at the time, according to "the new york times." the president asked everyone, including the attorney general jeff sessions to leave and said he wanted to have a private conversation with the head of the fbi. james comey in this memo, which was not obtained by "the new york times" but they had it read to them by an associate of the former fbi director. apparently in that, according to the former fbi director, the president said of michael flynn, that he had done nothing wrong, that the fbi should move on from this investigation, or words to the effect of "i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go." according to "the new york times," former fbi director had a suspicion of what the president might be up to an

john roberts is live at the white house. just in the briefing. what else is the white house saying about health care? >> jon, good afternoon. looks like a dam has broken on the healthcare bill when john upton and billy long said they changed from a no vote to a yes vote in this idea of pre-existing conditions. the president said the mandate to cover pre-existing conditions is in the overall healthcare act as contained in the new mcarthur amendment. but there was the problem with the waivers. a lot of people were worried while the states can opt out, that might people without coverage or coverage so expensive they can't afford it so upton and long came to the white house with a compromise. so now the white house is feeling good about this. there's questions as to whether or not the $8 billion has been allocated to cover high risk pools would be enough. sean spicer said nobody can make that calculation, which begs the question, how do they make the calculation in the first place that $8 billion is proposed by upton and long would be enough. here's

john roberts has more on this. john, president trump's plan is that he is ready to negotiate peace between the palestinians. a lot of news coming out of that meeting today as well. >> definitely. you see this a number of times in the past. there's no question that every time a new administration comes in and we've seen it over the past three administrations, there's always optimistic talk ab finally achieving middle east peace. but there is a sense particularly among the palestinian, that president trump may be the one who can get this done. and his national security adviser speaking at the israel independence day dinner last night was suggesting that his disruptive nature may make him the sort of person who can change the status quo. he's got a good relationship with benjamin netanyahu. he appears to have a good relationship with mahmoud abbas. he's saying to abbas that the palestinian authority has to stop payments to the families of terrorists. and also saying to the israelis that the continued development of set

john roberts is with us from his post at the white house. john, update us as you can. >> you heard the president saying he's very close to naming an fbi director i'm told by senior administration officials. the leading candidate is joe lieberman, who was the attorney general in connecticut. so he's got some state law enforcement background. no federal law enforcement background. he spent a lot of time in the federal government and he knows a lot of people. joe lieberman, by the way, 75 years old. so he would be sort of up there in terms of age as far as the history of fbi directors go. but i think that the president likes him because he was a democrat, he's an independent. he's a defense hawk. he's tough on law enforcement. i think a lot of democrats probably see joe lieberman as much of the republican ideology than they do the actual democratic ideology, though he continued to caucus with the democratic party after going independent. we do not know in the president will make the announcement before he leaves for saudi arabia. with the presid

but first, chief white house correspondent john roberts. good evening, john. >> good evening, martha. it is interesting to see the special prosecutor being named now, a couple of days before the president has out on his first european trip. in the middle, as well, of increasingly shrill calls from democrats on capitol hill for a special prosecutor to be appointed. right at the time that the president who is interviewing candidates to replace james comey as fbi director, the timing of the notification that came from the justice department, we are told it was about an hour before the announcement was made public. it was about 6:00 p.m., so it was probably around 5:00 p.m. what happen right with the president was talking to either the former oklahoma governor frank keating or richard mcphee lee, another top official at the fbi about the job to replace james comey. now, for the white house, this is kind of a two way sword. it gives democrats off their back but then, the same time, as you mentioned, just three months into his presidency, a speci

john roberts is live from the briefing room right now with more. john, what'd you make of that? >> reporter: good afternoon to you. earlier today in the middle of a tweet storm the president sent out a tweet that was quite remarkable and something that i have never seen a president say, at least publicly. i have been covering white houses going all the way back to 1999 when he tweeted out, quote, james comey better hope there are no, quote, tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press. what the president was talking about was an article that suggested james comey, during that conversation that they had over dinner, was asked by the president to basically give an oral loyalty pledge and that the fbi director declined. sean spicer said the president never asked james comey to pledge his loyalty to him, but he all wouldn't take any further questions about whether or not there were recordings of that conversation or recordings of two subsequent phone conversations that the president had with the fbi director in which the president claims that, like the dinner, th

let's go right to chief white house correspondent john roberts, who is in the briefing room. john, what's the mood like there? what's the reaction? >> reporter: what was really interesting is i think we advanced the story somewhat today. she did it when she said the president lost confidence in his fbi director over the past few months and, in fact, had been thinking ab firing him going all the way back to the election. we were told yesterday and again this morning by the vice president when he appeared u7 on capitol hill that this was the doing of the deputy attorney general ron rosenstein who decided to undertake a review of the entire case surrounding james comey when he was confirmed to become the deputy attorney general on april 25th. but now we find out, and i was postulating this last night, thinking ab pulling back the layers of the onion. this president has not been a huge fan of james comey for a long time even though there is video of him on january 22nd when he first met with him when he was meeting with a number of officials from law enforcement, called him over f
