[ laughter ] >> but yeah i'm really grateful it exists. it counts as real movie kevin klein makes eight real movie. >> you make it a real movie. >> it will be in theater. there's no guarantee that when you make a small one like this it's going happen. >> di you this in 2014 and you just got an award in 2016 tribeca. >> yeah. >> what was the delay. >> it took while. i think they made two star wars movies in the time. >> and a bay watch film. >> that's right. simple animation. part of it was it took me awhile to edit the movie to get it to work i did a tour. i still do stand up and i did 35 city tour i thought i didn't know what i was getting into. we'll edit will be fin it took some work. there was a tour and netflix special in there and tribeca it did well a year ago and sold a year ago so that wasn't my fall. the last year was i guess they just wanted to wait for the right time. >> his stand up is incredible. inn corp.s music and it l illustrations into it. i've senior work. i love taking woodstock one of the greatest film maker of all time. >> really lucky. one of the scenes in this film that kind of i relate to the most the moment you're on the plane and to set this up for the audience ooh sitting next to random stranger who will not stop talking to you and you literally stay i want to take a nap. >> yeah. >> so what, that is something everybody has been involved in talk about how that's come from leaf real live experience and do you have advice for people who just want to sleep on the plane and not talk to everybody? >> so the movie it's a personal story and it's grounded and really emotional thing but i'm a comedian i wanted to put comedy in there i hope the laughs will be earn. some of them come out emotional experience that is will lead to cathartic l there are observational comedy. that was a scene on plane kate brew atlantic plays the woman who sits next to meme she's a great comic. great improvise sorry high this scene and i thought she would be funny 40 schenn was. just a woman who kind of tortured me i mean i'm sure you've found this the lack of self awareness. >> right. >> in our world. >> they don't know. >> people don't know. you don't want to be a jerk and then it's weird because you're stuck with them the whole fl flight. so it's -- i try to keep myself. i find headphones are super helpful. you just keep them on the whole time. i'm not being a jerk i'm just leg zenning to something and i try to sleep or keep my eyes closed even when i'm not sleeping. >> did you get the inspiration from this movie from just a whole bunch of different things in your life. >>> yeah. >> things that you you've seen. >> yeah. so i guess you call it i mc al core of the movie is based on stuff my family went through even though it's a comedy it does deal with loss and grief and my life i lost my dad when i was 20 and he was only 46. so our family was devastated it was really over 20 years ago now, so i have distance from it. but anyone who lost someone knows it's not linear the process. ten years later you can have a day that's as bad as the day& after you lost someone. so i wanted to deal with that stuff. >> the whole point of this movie the point i took from it the idea when you lose somebody this is obviously in the trailer when you lose somebody it helps you find yourself. a tag line for it. but i fine it fascinating you don't want your mom -- family's house to be sold. >> yeah. >> i'm curious that idea of nostalgia that idea of going home to your house but also the idea of change and where is that balance? how do you -- how do you move forward in a situation like that? >> yeah, my working title when i was working oh and my little script was, um, the first thing you never get over. my experience, you know, i was 20 so in a lot of ways i was lucky my parents loved each other and they didn't beat each other up or us or anything. i feel like nothing a lot of other comedians people have it roug a lost people have it rough. so a lot of ways, you know, i didn't have rough c and there was this grieving process, and then trying to move forward and trying to come out of it, but then realizing that that doesn't mean you'll ever get over it. >> right. >> it just kind of changes your life and for all of us i think if you've been around a divorce, losing someone, your house burning down, whatever it is, there's that thing that you're like wow i'm forever changed. yeah, you want to move forward but i think, yeah, i think nostalgia is a good word for it trying to hold on to parts of your former life in a sense. >> look, we got to go. >> okay. >> real quick before you go i want to know the toughest part acting, directing, writing, or fatherhood? >> fatherhood. redding comes in and sets up shop and start his ranchero and begins selling off land to other people who sell off their farms and ranches. strikes inold rush 1849 and redding finds out what is going on with the gold and knows that this area has the potential and discovers gold himself. that became the beginning of the gold rush in shasta county. agriculture was here before gold. redding, when california became a state, he was trying to make registerednchero got but had to register with the state of california. century, the 20th system for registering brands was to get this cow shaped head and fill out the back with information. book is a wonderful produced by our historical registriess early which is great historical research where we can ask learn more about families. one of the things we discovered is this is a livestock area. his range cattle and beef cattle and that's one of the things that was wrought in here initially. they were very valuable at time. variousa underwent changes. he was going grapes and pairs and fruit became a big deal. capital of prune northern california at one point. irrigation changes that at all the sudden, we can irrigate land and get more cattle, growing more hay and alfalfa and we get very cattle. there he becomes a big industry and slowly but surely, that erodes and we are back to beef cattle again, which is one of our big exports out

redding library which is the main branch of the public libraries. come inside with us as we learn about the early history of shasta county. >> today we are here in redding, california, and we are at the redding library of the shasta public libraries, and we are on the second floor of the library in the fireside room. today we're going to be looking at items from our local history collection which is called the boggs collection. so the collection is named after may bacon boggs. she moved as a child out to shasta county in 1871, and she grew up here in old shasta. and she had had a love for history and particularly transportation and early california history. so she, throughout her life she was collecting items, and she did collect books, and she ended up giving some of her -- a portion of her collection plus a cabinet to the library, and that was the start of the boggs collection. now the boggs collection has grown, and we've outgrown the cabinet -- [laughter] and we are now in many cabinets. it consists of probably about 5,000 items. and the collection focuses on early california history, native americans but then particularly the history of shasta county. so this collection is important bec

redding was completely underwater. taken in downtown redding. act then, it was a wild river that turned into a giant lake. all of that flooding did cause problems but amazingly enough, february of 90 teen 40 two july, five short months, they got all cleaned up and they were ready to start holding the dam itself. ony brought gravel and sand a 9.6 mile long conveyor built -- conveyor belt that had to be built. all of that material was brought to the dam site and mixed together at the base of what would become the dam and that concrete was delivered in eight yard buckets. buckets were on seven cable ways radiating out, delivering concrete. as the concrete was delivered, gentlemen like this man here would pick up a big compactor in his job was to pack the concrete down and make sure there were no air bubbles or pockets there. it's actually a stiff, dry mix. big airnd up with a pocket, it will end up collapsing in on itself. his job was incredibly important, but imagine doing that all day long. they were paid big bucks -- $.90 an hour or $7.20 a day to do that in the summer sun and the rain. once it started, it didn't stop for four and a half years. 24/7. as it built up the sides of the dam, they were getting ready to start the spillway section. they built a new permanent home and use the same tunnel. so they could try out the area for the spillway. they got into here, they place a valve on the spillway each we saw earlier that allowed to take its natural course and they could plug the tunnel. what they wanted to do was get the lake full. the superintendent, the same guy who told hoover dam, the like the most prudent thing to do was to start filling the lake. as they are building up the spillway, the water was like this and they were able to store enough water to generate power for the first time, which was a year before the dam was completed. as this generator is spinning, is producing 142 megawatts. it's capable of taking care of 135,000 homes. they will run as needed to the water, so as the allotment comes in, they will average it out over 24 hours and deliver water in conjunction with the power demands and it will release the water during the afternoon. they will save it for the middle of the day when they know they are going to need electricity. the power comes as a byproduct but they do try to afford it. over here is the machine shop, all original 1940's equipment used to pick -- used to fix the parts of the generator that might need repair. they can actually manufacture or tool different pieces here. in front of us, this is a giant lave so they can tool a giant shaft if they need to. we have presses and drills and things like that, so as things are repaired, they can take care of that in the machine shop. when the dam was built, there were 9 million people living in california. pushing 40re million. a lot more people, same amount of water. global warming to the possibility of heavy storms, we have to deal with less water in other places. now we have all these people who need water to live and so we will make facilities like this more important than how we manage them and supply of water even more important. long, american history tv is joining our charter communications partners to showcase the history of redding, california. to learn more about the cities on our current tour, visit c-span.org/cities tour. we continue now with our look at the history of redding. >> we are driving across shasta jet -- shasta dam right n iown the middle of shasta county's copperbelt. on the lake side of the

red army and the coming of communism. his exposure to that part of the world, which was completely different than san francisco or redding, gave him some insight. there was an international group of people in the expedition that went to vladivostok. there were japanese there, french people there, army people, so he had their point of view to contemplate. so i would say it influences his understanding of the world. so the multinational force left vladivostok and he returned to the united states. back to the great area, where he had his connections to stanford, one of which he and become , was with theh hoover commission. that would be herbert hoover, later president of the united states, and the first thing was that mr. hoover is famous for in this commission is the relief after world war i of belgium and holland. now, he earl, would write about needs, publicize, help promote, whatever the hoover commission wanted to do. it was very, very successful. thing thatt major was really major that he worked -- that he humor worked on with the hoover commission was a massive mississippi river flood that overflowed the banks of the mississippi in the 1920's, and the commission went and with help to get these people along the river back on their feet. many of the people he met, he would later write about because they were, i guess you would call them movers and shakers and policymakers. so, his reputation was established, both here in california, and throughout the country. probably his best friend was earl warren. he knew him from the days of being a district attorney in oakland, and later became thenney general, and governor of the state of california, and that you know, chief justice of the supreme court. throughout earl waa rren's political career he would , promote issues important to him. and that group of people included mostly republicans, but also the other side of the aisle, and even socialists that evenhandedlyite about their approach to issues. he concentrated on what their answers were to the problems we faced as citizens of california and the united states. this made him also very ppealing for other people. he was comfortable in his interviews without worry of someone having a preconceived prejudice or slant. his observations were interesting from that point of view for me, and then i read some of his articles and i honest, openis an hand approach and using , journalism to transmit people's ideas and promote the people themselves, not prejudging them, just listening mainly to what their point of view was. and then leaving it up to the public to decide, oh, ok, varnish on of the it, this is the difference between a and b and make up , their own minds about these issues, how they would vote or how they would support the individuals, and that included upton sinclair, people who were more socialist, different ideas, some of which would gradually come to pass. most of these laws that we have have an evolutionary. so, i think he would have been today, concerned about most of those rules of law being adhered to for everybody. i'm not sure. i can't write for him, but i think that would be his approach to our situation even today. as he got older, he received many accolades, many awards. he received recognition, but probably the most important was he received the presidential medal of freedom in 1970 by then-president richard nixon. after that, he was still active and consulted, and as he gradually grew older, he saw the coming of ronald reagan in the early 1980's, and earl the squire. behrens passed away in 1985. >> are cities tour staff travel to redding, california to learn about its rich history. learn about redding and other stops on our tour at c-span .com/citiestour. history unfolds daily. in 19 70 nine, c-span was created as a public service by america's cable companies. it is brought to you today by your company -- or cable or satellite provider. next on american history tv, we hear a panel of historians discuss american motivations for entering world war i, how the country mobilized for war, and government restrictions on protests. centerional constitution for philadelphia hosted this hour-long event. >> i am so excited for this program. we started planning it a few months ago, and i have been looking forward to it. we are celebrating the 100 anniversary of american entry into world war i. and while we remember it as the great war, and as a turning point in american history, there was a sense in which
