i want to start first with msnbc's garrett haake live in roswell, georgia. garrett, yesterday we were saying that this race was a dead heat. walk us through the last 14 hours. >> reporter: well, stephanie, in the last few hours of this race, republicans really came home. republicans feel like they had the stronger closing message. they made a big deal out of the fact that jon ossoff wasn't from this district. they doubled down that he would be an ally of nancy pelosi. in the primary ossoff got 48% of the votes. after all the votes were counted last night, he ended up with 48% of the votes. he came about 10,000 votes shy of karen handel's total, which was 134,000 votes. that means more than half of people voted early in this race. but the late breakers voted for karen handel and that was enough for her to carry it. one of the first people to congratulate her and perhaps one of the happiest people with this development was president trump. he tweeted late last night, i think i can read this to you. well, the special elections are over and those that all want t
