think about that for a minute. 1967 comes, new detroit comes, everyone is committed to doing the right thing, desperately trying to address past wrongs. the one institution that misses the meetings, does not race itself was the detroit police department. what a missed opportunity. you had this really important institution delivering direct frontline first responder services to everybody lives in detroit, a city that was increasingly black, and stayed in warrior mode. stayed in occupying force mode. stayed in we are going to contain these people mode. and i think it goes back a long way. i am currently on the board of the police commissioner but problems with the police department go back a long way. the entire world owes henry ford a huge debt. a very complex man. i'm not here to castigate him or defend him, but i will point out the five dollar a day introduction he made for people working in his factories was revolutionary. that was acknowledged by every economic historian. rumor has it that as a part of the response, as the great migration occurred, with literally millions of african

new detroit being a large one. most of these organizations -- both of these organizations are still around today. as a copy of the carter commissioner in this case it was a very vital report that came out a year after that really sort of showcased all the inequities that going on in the city. this was specifically for detroit, but it was happening in every city. this was threat to country, it was really spotlighting what was happening in detroit, and how we can change it. how we come as a city could change it and made very specific recommendations for how the future could be different if we made these changes. hadrtunately, a lot of that not been looked at or followed. we've got a lot of video in these spaces. schools, theo from other activism that was going on at the time. unity you got black power coming to the foreground. a lot of free johnson player, which was in those very local. he was somebody who was incarcerated for drugs, kenneth cockrell ended up being a very big mover and shaker later, this is one he re

hadave any detroit and we -- the new detroit and people who tried to do, whether it was new detroit or the other businesses that started up in detroit because of that. but there was always skepticism. detroit.ople who left to mississippi and were killed. by people who left detroit to go and help with the civil rights movement. many of those people were active here, but also want to other places. we get people in the seminary who went out to the street to try to help. priests whoters and went out to the street to try to get people to understand what is best for the city also is the best for them. a great number of people work hard. we had anfortunately lot of people who played the blame game. they burn your houses down, let them suffer. the flight from detroit started long before 19 the seven. it started after -- 1967. it started after the second world war. in 1953 we are close to 1.9 million people. as a young boy my family could not a place to live because of race. all these things were an integral part of what we had to live with and try and remedy. >> this is griggs in livonia, mich
