clarence wade and his wife are still recovering but things could have turned out very differential if not for these two heroes. >> it was scary. it was really scary. >> reporter: surrounded by smoke and fire inside this northwest d.c. home, alex and heroically rescued clarence wade. >> you hear stuff burning and you hear stuff popping, you see the smoke. everything happened so fast with the smoke. i was a little bit scared. >> reporter: the fire broke out early thursday morning and rapidly spread. clarence was on the first floor, his wife, geneva upstairs, she broke through this back window and climbed out and called police. meanwhile, clarence was still inside suffering from smoke inhalation and minor burns. police arrived later and neighbors watched as officers put their lives on the line. >> we started yelling to see if anybody was inside and sure enough we could hear someone yelling from the inside. >> reporter: that's when they ran in and pulled him out. the officers had a couple cuts and inhaled the smoke, they're okay. firefighters showed up a few minutes later and put out the
