one of the revered speakers at this conclave, james mcpherson, was quoted in "usa today" three or four years ago on presidents' day saying buchanan was the worst president we had. a debatable proposition, but not one most disagree with. certainly mcpherson was not the first person to suggest that. others have said it in rather firm tones. and what we do know about buchanan tends to, again, be more of an elevator talk than a very complicated rendering of a very, i would call it, formidable individual in a time of great trouble for the country. and he was not fundamentally up to meeting the challenge that he faced. what we know about buchanan, or at least what we think we know, is that he was weak-kneed in the time of greatest stress and crisis. the historian robert remeni loved to talk about how buchanan did only two things in the secession crisis. he prayed and he cried. according to remeni. to add to that, he would say something to the effect that he would say, please let this chalice pass from me. it doesn't give you a sense of formidable leadership at all. that's what john and i wer
