and most recently served as a foreign policy fellow for senator marco rubio of florida. so with that, why don't we dig in and, jonathan, i wanted to start with you and ask for a bit of a reality check, on how bad are things right now? and is the situation more or less under control, so to speak than it appears from externally from the roller-coaster of the past few months? >> fair questions. there is public and there is private and i do think that we had several weeks ago a situation induced frankly by the president's own remarks that almost had an implication of a readiness to precede prevent war against north korea. i don't know exactly what motivated the president but the reality was ironically then that north korea, argument was, well there is this dueling war going on -- kim jong-un was not even seen for over two weeks. he was out-of-pocket. and even the supposed threat to lobbing four missiles at guam, i probably read too much north korean propaganda but it is revealing in all kind of ways. one thing you should always remember about north korean propaganda everythi

me, there are a growing number of republicans that says the president needs to be doing more, marco rubio, orrin hatch, ted cruz, calling this domestic terrorism. do you agree this was domestic terror? >> it does meet the definition of domestic terrorism in our statute. we are pursuing it when the department of justice in every way that we can make a case. you can be sure we will charge and advance the investigation toward the most serious charges that can be brought because this is an unequivocally unacceptable and evil attack that cannot be accepted in america. so absolutely that is a factor that we'll be looking at. >> you have said the president will speak out again on this and there was senator cory gardner of colorado who said this -- >> call this white supremacism, this white nationalism evil and let the country hear it, let the world hear it. it's something that needs to come from the oval office and this white house needs to do it today. >> it's a republican senator from colorado. is that coming now from the president? >> well, the president, i suspect, will be talking to the cou

[laughing] he's a great kid and hope to do something other than journalism, but anyway. he's 12, thank you. how about right here. >> back to the polarization issue that we've been having for the last 30 years or more, weird use a going? do you see any solution to it? are we going to be able to end it before it destroys us? >> that's a great question and it's what one of us in the question our time. i don't know. you sort of feel like at a a certain point that burns itself out, at some point we say okay, we have to find a giveaway of doing things but every moment that encourage people to say that, it diminishes almost be merely, vanishes. sometimes it happens after these terrible acts of violence were all kind of come together and say we are one country, all americans, we ought to have our differences civil and respectful, then that lasts about five minutes. so i don't know what event or white issue

marco rubio said a tax on routes are ridiculous.h korea would react different if he used kinder words. what do you make of it? >> i understand he's trying to back up the president. my concern is not so much what donald trump said, but whether or not there was a strategy or goal in mind. so often we see trump's comments or saying things off the cuff that aren't fully thought through. this plan, i would love to know what it is and possibly get behind it. we don't know that yet. >> robbie, during the campaign, hillary clinton had strong things to say about north korea and the regime. she wasn't president, but go back to her husband presidency, in 1993, he says about north korea, if they ever use them, talking nuclear weapons, it would be the end of their country. this is not the first president to use this language against north korea. how do you see it? >> i agree with him on this. i don't think it's strategic. nobody wants a war here. if we provoke north korea first or they strike first, a lot of human life is going to be lost, incl

. >> senator, why didn't conservatives listen to ted cruz, jeb bush, marco rubio, rick perry, all who laid it out starkly on the issue of donald trump and conservativism? >> well, what i do in the book, borrowed from barry goldwater's tome in 1960, he thought that the party had kind of given in to the new deal and felt that he ought to put a blueprint forward for conservativism. i think today conservativism has kind of been compromised by populism, and people might say, well, we have the house, we have the senate, we have the white house, republicans do, but not long ago we had that in 2006, and we lost it because i don't think we acted very conservative are with all the spending and everything else that went on. so i think that just because we have the house and senate and the white house we can't rest easy and we can't say that populism is a governing philosophy because i don't believe that it is. >> what -- i am curious, what motivated you to write this book? donald trump's character or this issue with conservativism that you're just making the argument and others have made to me b
