i know you've been with a lot of these people throughout the week, griff jenkins, thank you. mean welcome a peter doocy riding along on a u.s. customs and border protection air marine unit black hawk helicopter. they've already done about 500 rescues in and out bringing food to people in flooded areas and surveying the areas. peter, tell us what you're seeing right now. >> sandra, we are now above fort arthur with some of the marine operations crew. they're using these blackhawks to rescue people. now we're looking out at some of these neighborhoods that are still completely submerged. you can see that the roads are accessible, but there are a lot of abandoned cars in this neighborhood that people are still not able to get to their homes. the other hard-hit areas that we've flown over today, there are entire families heading back and taking basically their entire life, all there really possessions out to the curb because they are either warped or moldy. this is an area that is almost completely inaccessible. we are think to our friends at the air marine operations for border

we begin with griff jenkins. while the rain has stopped, we understand there are still rivers that are continuing to rise, that has to add insult to injury. >> we are here on the river. we are in a community and north rosenberg texas that is underwater. there are communities around here, he has brought us on his boat, we are not able to take on the river because it is going to crest if it hasn't already at its peak, a record 56 feet. sheriff, first of all, some of the communities around here have expressed concern of these rising waters. what information do need them to know at this moment? >> early on, models showed that the river is going to crest to 59 feet. after a few days, we discovered it was projected to go to 57 and now it's 56 feet. we have a community to the north here that is protected by a system that can handle 58 feet. we are now in a community in the north side of rosenberg that is not protected by a levee system. the river has obviously exceeded its banks and you can see the devastation, 55 feet

griff jenkins live, we can tell you on the ground but more accurately on the water in west houston. reporter: leeland, in this west houston neighborhood, residents coming back to try and get valuables out of their homes after being told they should voluntarily evacuate by mayor sylvester turner because the reservoirs in particular the addicks reservoir overflowing here in this neighborhood and they expect this to last for the next 14 to 15 days this flooding as the army corps of engineers says they have to simply release more and more water to travel downstream. we spoke with one of the residents tom richardson who came back for his valuables and he says "we need more help and we need answers on why we were sacrificed without being told to leave" this as the death toll reaches at least 40 and expected to rise as in some areas where the water has receded we may find even grimmer news. back to you, leeland. >> well we certainly know that the searchers are there on the ground, griff jenkins live in west houston we're going to check in with griff through out the day for some of these ver

griff jenkins in rosenberg, texas. griff, we can see the amount of water that is stuck there is amazing. >> reporter: that's right, cheryl. this is the brazos river, southwest, it runs all over the south part below houston, but it is one of the major waterways causing the flooding, and earlier today breaking, a record, it crested at 55.19 feet. the record was set last year, at a devastating flood memorial day 54.7 feet. now crested at 55.19 and the communities all along the brazos river in the rosenberg area and elsewhere are absolutely homes that are underwater. we showed them. the folks aren't going to be returning to this part for weeks, and as you mentioned in houston, some folks coming back, however, the army corps of engineers and the reservoirs, the addicks and barker reservoirs are releasing water to get them out and flow ultimately in the water ways and the river. let me show you the absolute danger of this kind of water, the strong currents. county officials gave me a piece of this discarded roadblock sign, we

griff jenkins live on marco island. we gipp with peter doocy in jacksonville where they are expecting even more historic flooding. peter, good morning. >> todd, good morning. here in jacksonville, more than 106,000 people still without power in dark neighborhoods like this one where power lines still lie beneath giant trees that snapped when irma came to town. in jacksonville there are about 1400 at last check still in shelters. that's roughly half how many there were in shelters during the storm. but many schools are going to be closed for a long time here because schools are being used as shelters for the displaced. hundreds had to be rescued from high water here in jacksonville and nowed sheriff's office is urging people to get out before they need to be saved in dangerous, swift current running up their streets if it happens again. they tweeted. this we hope that 356 people who had their lives saved yesterday will take evacuation orders more seriously in the future. the mayor, lenny curry explained the reasoning lik

griff jenkins in naples. how are things shaping up there? >> schaap -- shep, shaping up off of everglades city. on its way, hours away come is still big enough. let me get out of the way and let our viewers look. a block off of the beach you can see the wind whipping and what is the boat channel, several boats that are blowing them up far too dangerous, but we wanted to give you a shot in the wind. as they talked all morning, the wind is now traveling south almost parallel to the beach, but the water is still going out a little bit. the storm surge has not even begun to think about coming back as it approaches. when it does, that is the real danger. you can see the wind gusting up, getting sort of a great perspective of just how powerful these wins are. we are the last reported the national weather service radars say it with sustained winds of almost 50 miles an hour and gusts constantly at about 78 miles an hour. once that 150-mile an hour wind hits here and there shouldn't be too far off, it's going to change the dynamic or magically appea

griff jenkins in key largo. >> that's right, you can feel the winds just the prevailing winds starting here in key largo. a message from the county administration very clear, get out. because they are going to get a certain 1-2 punch. person will be the wind, then the storm surge as much as 10 feet, and that could put key largo and other parts of the keys underwater. that's why they are so worried. i'm joined now by burgess warren, a manager here at the key largo marina and the surrounding areas. this is a big one part of them never seen it, are you worried? >> naturally, i'm worried about it. extremely worried. i've been here for 24 years, and a number of hurricanes. cat 1 into 2, and we stayed there for those, but this is 4 and 5, considerable worry. we can see that we are just passed high tide, so what will go up from here with the surge. just above high tide, and it will go up ten 10 feet from here. we have to look at everything around here, so we feel comfortable with buildings, but the big thing is that surge, what the water will do as they raise the boats up and come in. >> as w
