joining me now to discuss this, michael eric dyson, sociology propresser. n political commentator ben ferguson. thank you to both of you for joining me. michael, you first. how do you interpret all that is unfolding? >> it indicates that the players understand they were insulted by the president of the united states of america. so in order to protect the integrity of their game they felt they had no choice but to lock arms and lock aims with those players who have already understood that this is bigger than a protest about a flag. it's not about the national anthem or the flag. it was primarily colin kaepernick's response was to black people who were unarmed being shot down in the streets by police and asking the criminal justice system to be held accountable. that resulted in his taking a knee during the national anthem because it did not signify the full acceptance of african-american american people in the country. with the insult delivered on friday night the rest of the league got in order and understood this is something that not only hurts those parti

john: that michael eric dyson.e slavery gave american capitalists a head start because they didn't have to pay workers. so they say slavery made capitalism successful. but economist don boudreaux says the opposite's true. what do you mean? >> that's just a crazy notion. slavery has been around for about 10,000 years, since the beginning of the agricultural revolution. if slavery were instrumental in starting capitalism, why did it take 10,000 years for it to start? also if you look at the places in the world where capitalism first took off -- britain and holland -- they got rid of slavery early. look at the americas. in the northern part of the united states, slavery was gotten rid of long before it was gotten rid of in the southern part, and the northern part was the capitalist part, the wealthier part -- john: more prosperous in almost every way. >> for the rich and the middle classes in the north and in the south. john: but there's a logic to it, if you could get free labor from some workers, then those capitali

michael eric dyson. tears we cannot stop:sermon to white america.nd the conservative case for trump author brett mcdonald. it's not about race. it's not about him being against something. it's all positive and about progress. do you buy it? >> not at all. the reality is that the nfl nascar, not so much major league baseball, 8.3% black, 20% something latino. we know we're dealing with an overwhelmingly white response from this president to a perceived black league or at least perceived black players who are acting in historically constructed terms as uppity. it's about race because these young men have argued that the central issue that they're concerned about is the fair treatment of people of color beyond their ranks. they're not concerned about themselves. they're not being selfish, as we ask athletes to do. they're being concerned about something bigger and broader. what is that? the unfair treatment of their people, of the ways in which police brutality have riled the african-american community. so, yes, the president is responding out of the b
