first time i have ever flown on a boatplane. i am very excited. i think it will be a great way to see tilos. i am a tiny bit nervous, but mostly excited. orchestral music. that was absolutely insane. a bit of a bobby takeoff, this thing goes so fast in the water, then itjust took off into the sky. i can't believe this thing actually gets up there. a great way to see tilos. if you ever come to the island, definitely try this out. if flying is not your thing, how about this? probably one of the most relaxing and scenic ways to see tilos is by bicycle. you might see some wildlife along the way, but right now i'm on my way to check out something that up until 110w check out something that up until now has been a vital link between tilos in the outside world. and this is it. these cables here. they have in connecting tilos to another island called kos around 100 kilometres away. traditionally, that is how tilos has been getting its power from kos. from is how tilos has been getting its powerfrom kos. from here, the power travels underwater to kos, and up until now it has been a lifeline for tilos. the underwater cable sounds like a good idea, but the oil generated power is expensive and the line is vulnerable to breakdown. when that happens, the island and its tourists are left without electricity. but thanks to a locally devised initiative, telos has now set about generating its own electricity in a sustainable and eco— friendly way. —— tilos. i am about to meet a representative from the company called unis, which is the company called unis, which is the company called unis, which is the company installing the renewable energy tech on the island. i think they are coming off the ferry right 110w. they are coming off the ferry right now. this man is a mechanical engineer who has been heavily involved in the project. 0verseeing the installation of a vast bank of solar panels and a wind turbine. in combination with the winds turn mine and the battery storage we are hoping that we can satisfy the demands of the island, and of course, at certain hours of the day, we can also provide power to be kos complex. the solar park is not enough on its own. the wind turbine is also a vital part of the energy system. the wind turbine has the ability to operate, produce energy, throughout the day, 21w. so this means that comprising both energy forces, and storing media more short—term storage of energy in the battery, it provides full operational power. the current mayor of tilos, maria kamma, grew up on the island. for her, protecting the moment through renewable energy has been a number one priority. —— the environment. translation: the mentality of the island is that we love and protect the environment. it has been something we have been fighting force many years. how can we be independent from polluting sources which harm the environment. an opportunity was presented through the programme, and we decided to participate and offer our island for this experiment or project. —— experimental. i started running this hotel from 1991... avoiding power cuts and be more eco— friendly will have the benefits for the restau ra nts a nd hotels have the benefits for the restaurants and hotels of tilos. i have decided to catch up with a hotelier to see how they think tourism might the affected by the renewable energy scheme. first of all, we were not going to pollute. secondly, where you will get away from the power cuts. we have a lot of power cuts, not a good quality of electricity. so we will have a better quality, we will save our electrics. andreas knows that tourists you still want things like televisions, hairdryers and air—conditioning, so the challenge is to ensure there will be enough renewable energy to still power them. tourists and locals might also be able to get around the island in new ways, with future plans for things like electric bicycles and motorbikes and charging stations for electric cars. the body here is suggesting that this scheme can be replicated across all of the greek islands. —— nobody here. the tourist industry here on tilos is pretty sustainable and low key anyway, but they are setting a good example, so let's hope that at least some of the other islands to follow their lead. —— do follow. and if you are thinking of heading there soon, here is our rundown of things you should know before surprise surprise in the united states you have people like john mccain say hey this might be a good idea to send weapons that way but as it stands right now there is absolutely nothing official to the extent that we know how south korea is protected when it comes to nuclear weapons it is still under the u.s. so-called umbrella of nuclear protection so there are weapons and in the right direction if south korea does get hit the u.s. protective pan as well and all of its allies in that region but as it stands right now so the korea officially has no nuclear weapons on its soil but as we can see that could change very very quickly if not for her of its own trying to for us thank you thank you. and coming up on r t we're live from miami with an update on the damage inflicted by hurricane arma. i think the average viewer just after watching a couple of segments understands that we're telling stories in our critics can't tell you know why because their advertisers won't let them. in the order to create change you have to be honest you have to tell the truth parties able to do that every story is built on going after the back story to what's really happening out there to the american what's happening when it's for peroration makes a pharmaceutical big chill speech when a company in the environmental business ends up polluting a river that causes cancer and other illnesses and they put all the health risk all the dangers out to the american public those are stories that we tell every week and you know what they're working. i'm john harshman i'll give you what the mainstream media can't so big picture. here. and when question finally you're looking to see. we'll go deeper investigate and debate all so you can get the big picture. what you have for breakfast yesterday why would you put those up. to do on like your name and what your biggest fear is that a bit of the hate the so let's talk a little bit old you say if you ever met. the. one topic those are. now i didn't use you to question. after making landfall in the state of florida has weakened to a tropical storm as of this morning authorities warn it's still dangerous millions of homes and businesses have lost power and at least four people have died in florida at least one in georgia for more on this we go live now to marina in miami so you were in miami over the weekend marina tell us more about what happened and how residents are dealing with the aftermath. well the destruction fell short of the initial forecast but nonetheless hurricane irma unleashed significant damage and flooding on the state of florida and now the hurricane touched ground in the florida keys as a category four but then it shifted to the west coast of the state meaning the i didn't make landfall in miami dade like what was initially predicted predict predicted but nonetheless miami and much of the east coast felt irma's winds that came in around one hundred twenty five miles per hour in some areas due to that we saw trees up rooted falling on the street in some cases falling on the houses so flooding in some parts of miami was really unprecedented in my neighborhood where i live in brickell brickell avenue honestly turned into a river the water was pushed up from the nearby bay and we just saw rivers forming throughout downtown miami three construction cranes according to reports three construction cranes in south florida collapsed and fell obviously a very dangerous scenario i had to evacuate brickell and fortunately found a safe house that was surrounded by cement the metal shutters were put on the windows and as safe as that house was ife i heard the winds i mean they were very fierce very strong you heard the trees falling outside that is why miami imposed a curfew to get everyone off the road but many people felt that here in miami you know residents dodged a bullet because it was to put the eye of the storm was supposed to hit this county six hundred sixty thousand people were evacuated from miami dade the largest evacuation this county has ever seen for those who state that those who returned to their homes they were very grateful that the damage wasn't worse take a listen. there was a little bit more damage based on their trajectory of the storm as we were told the storm is going up that far west but. a large. amount. of rain in pretty bad weather it feels like it could have been worse than this. could have been. i mean i should go what that last person just said it really could have been a lot worse because we got the outer bands of this hurricane and so much damage was caused but as i mentioned this this this hurricane shifted west last minute going up the west coast it made landfall in marco island as a category three and as soon as officials saw that the trajectory of this hurricane changed path seven hundred thousand people from the west coast of florida were immediately evacuated or put under mandatory evacuation so we saw between six and seven million people in the state of florida told to leave their homes because of this hurricane we're so glad that you're ok rina and now that the storm is heading toward alabama georgia and tennessee what are officials saying in terms of emergency management and also recovery. well officials are asking everyone in florida and the northern states to be patient we know as of nine am this morning two thirds of florida residents woke up without power we are told that roughly seven million customers between florida and georgia are without power most of those customers are in florida some people will have their power restored in a matter of days others will have their power is restored in a matter of weeks it really depends on the surrounding damage of each neighborhood in florida and the surrounding states but we heard from fema officials who are asking all those in florida and the other states that are going to be suffering the brunt of hurricane erm are now tropical storm irma to please be patient take a listen to the recent comments from a theme official requests that went into the president today that will have three components public assistance which will assist. governments at all different levels state local will assist charitable organizations. the minas bill and clatter of utilities that's going to be more some of the will have an immediate assistance in terms of debris removal and emergency action some of it's going to be the longer term rebuilding of infrastructure now there's still a curfew in effect for miami seven pm all cars off the road and that is so officials could could move in and and continue removing all the trees that have fallen onto the streets and to the homes a lot of cleanup we can only imagine rain important live in miami for us thank you so much. thank you and a new study by archaeologist dr david wright from seoul national university in south korea explains why hurricanes are manmade disasters originating thousands of years ago according to dr wright the storms we see today happening are a result of mismanagement of agriculture that led to the destruction of the river and water system in the sahara desert were fessor right sat down for an interview with our correspondent on your partner pill in seoul south korea here's a sneak peek with the full interview coming in the next hour i think if there was more vegetation. that it is. it is is likely that there would be fewer hurricanes hitting the east coast of the united states and mexico. well a group of progressives met this weekend in d.c. hoping to create a new political party the people's convergence invited senator bernie sanders to lead the creation however he was a no show to the events their group calling itself a draft bernie for a people's party gathered some fifty thousand signatures for support of the new party with or without sanders you may recall senator sanders who ran for president in the twenty sixteen election but lost to hillary clinton for the democratic nominee we're joined live by draft bernie founder nick brand i thank you so much for joining us today it's great to be here and so nick i mean you created this group after working on sanders twenty sixteen presidential campaign when did you decide to make up this group was it during his campaign you know it was afterwards actually seeing in the way in which the democratic party was responding having worked with the superdelegates on the campaign i was a national political outreach coordinator during the campaign so i worked closely with the superdelegates it was my job to lobby the party elites to support bernie sanders and did you see him as a true democrat during that time no not at all he was an independent is independent in spirit and his policies are always going against the grain inside the democratic party which is exactly why we're asking him to be consistent to that message and to that history that legacy and start a new party that genuinely represents people in a way that neither major party does today are you surprised at him not responding and not showing up. it was disappointing unfortunately that bernie sanders would not be able to come and sit down or even greet accept the signatures fifty thousand signatures that we were presenting him people worked very hard in order to gather these signatures these are fifty thousand working people we're calling bernie sanders to a conversation about what we're going to do given that the democratic party is not adopting the progressive platforms. that he and all of us have worked so hard to to advance and we know that you know the term progressive is nothing new it was you know there in the early one nine hundred so what makes you think it's going to be different this time around and right now we're basically at a two party system what makes you think a third party will get any kind of attention it is this is not an effort to create a third party necessarily our system only permits two parties this is an effort rather to replace the party the democratic party

rescue efforts with their local search and rescue teams rescue here to basically go house to house ensure that everybody is safe because there are so the limited communications as far as there's no power. so your connectivity there's no internet people weren't able to communicate up to that relatives that they're safe so a prime or a primarily they've been going through doing health and wellness checks for them. what what are the most pressing. needs for the people in the caribbean right now i mean they've had you know one storm after. you know who have been caught in the wake of these storms what do you feel is their most pressing needs right now. i think the biggest thing. in the immediate as far as. far as the. populating of being able to get out so that with that which is to be easier for people to go and do to. start the early recovery process. they were able to get over a thousand people which is over twenty percent of the population of the island already the challenges that. they evacuated to. now which are both hit more directly by last night's storm so with all of these different islands have to try to get people out because people that are here the less water we have to provide the less food that we have to provide beyond that the next immediate need getting communications up and getting power but the power is going to take several months to get back to these different islands. now anatomy you global tour it has and there are four hurricanes harvey. what has what you've seen on the ground then the most overlooked or neglected aspect in the preparedness for the of storms that you and other rescue workers have to contend with now what are the things we should be thinking about for the next storm or down. i think the biggest thing comes from the. core utility of the island as far as resilience for the water and electric structure. something a major hurricane like this was twenty years ago but they elected not to put the power lines underground which has caused. massive outages on these different islands so the biggest thing is going to be a resilient island in the future so that way they can avoid having. a void. like you know how what are your days are you you know as a son up to some of the war you know what is your average day consists of in this in this cleanup and recovery and the whole rehab out for. the certainly. we're working about eighteen hour days right now for the just passed over and. when it went out to start to move back we were all along twenty four hours so that least now that this storm's passed we'll be able to go back to our schedule and get out there to continue doing. that making sure everybody's safe after this storm. well let me ask you what's the best thing that those of us that aren't there what's the best way for us to help because we you get a lot of mixed messages you shouldn't donate to certain places or donating money to certain kinds of charities doesn't always help sending certain things actually causes more trouble for for you guys on the ground so what's the number one thing people here in the states and around the world what can we do to help this effort. i will one of the biggest challenges here is majority silence operate off of tourism which is going to be basically for the entire next season. so i would say probably. individuals that are watching show that know business or other thanks that might be in the hospitality industry or maintenance industry or other things is going to be a lot of people from jacket that are going to be out of court for the next twelve months so if they have the ability to absorb some of that labor then there's going to be a lot of people that are in need of it and that would further depopulate the island in the short term until the next season's able to start it up after the debris claims have been completed what are what's what's the next stop for you guys were where we're going to where is is global bird how long do you predict you'll be there and you know what's the what's what's the future look like. well for us we're absolutely we're actively looking at dominica right now we have personnel there on st thomas and also personnel that are on puerto rico. and i knew and whether or not synchro needs assistance far as getting their communications up but first a long term recovery effort here i think will be shifting into our kind of more recovery mode similar to what we did after superstorm sandy as far as working to make sure all of the residents here are properly if not applied to get assistance through. that way they can start to recover process themselves and do do you know are you just looking at you know what your experience in these disaster zones are you as a probably go to years ago i know that you worked a lot into haiti after the you know the flooding in the storm hit many years ago barrowman is a real look about the same kind of damage in the same kind of length of recovery. and things are going to take months just to get the electric and water back reconnected here it's probably going to take years to get back to the level of where the silent ones before just because it's the logistics are so difficult everything has to be brought in here and there's no airport to the island that we're on there's one helicopter pad and one clinic that group is heavily damaged so it's going to six bytes in time to get that infrastructure back on speaking of infrastructure what's the government such a way. and like there are there is there is there are there's there are government i mean when you when you die because i mean for everybody kind of outside looking in and you see that kind of devastation you know is there any form of infrastructure whatsoever just as far as order. i will fortunately it's kind of come together there's no mass looting or anything like that there are representatives on the ground and try to move which is the first island's territory of emergency management agency they're working together to try to coordinate here but their offices were completely destroyed so the stuff that is here is kind of focused on getting that emergency operation center back up and running quickly as possible so that way they can help other people. out what one of the things that i think comes up a lot is you know people in these situations you have essentially you know environmental refugees that have to get out of a place and come back. are there organizations are people really working to make sure that those people that those people that are moved can go back to their homes or go back to that situation and again it's one of those things that on our end what can we do to help that situation and. there are there are some individuals that are on these islands as well as community organizations that are focused on ensuring that the communities are able to come back to people not just sell their land off and that it becomes a large resort town or something like that so there are people that are working to make sure that those people that do want to stay or to my. car continue to be in it to do that forced out of their area well i got to say you know thank you so much for coming on and reporting i know you're busy guy down there don't let us keep your here longer from the good job that you're doing always a pleasure and you know. keep doing the best work you can down there and all the love and support as with you. certainly thank you very much for having no problem thank you for your work. with a casino probe and it's twenty plus year and moving closer to u.s. forces plus. a new illegal makeshift refugee camp set up on the side of the renowned french university forcing authorities to spend like just over safety concerns. you want to see international life from almost a studio with me in india today welcome to the program donald trump has delivered his first speech at the united nations criticizing the organization for bureaucracy and mismanagement and calling for reform all tease them open reports from new york on how the business meant and president would like to see more funding for money in diplomacy. the its owner is. donald trump has made his debut before the un the world's leading international body a body that he once called a club for people to get together talk and have a good time trouble opened the first session of the un general assembly with a quite familiar message make things great again with reform recent years the united nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement while the united nations on a regular budget has increased by one hundred forty percent and its staff has more than doubled since two thousand we are not seeing the results in line with this investment at this point the united states is the top contributor to the united nations the usa pays twenty two percent of the core un budget and twenty eight percent of the peacekeeping operations that's three times the second largest contributor china being a businessman this is how trump sees it because the usa is such a big contributor it has every right to question the un's results and the usa has been seeing itself over ruled by the international community when the un ruled against israeli settlements this triggered accusations of bias i'm here to emphasise the united states is determined to stand up to the un anti israel bias but i think most americans believe that you know to nations has become more anti-semitic more anti israeli and i'm a big internationalist but we're going to stop the money until we get this fixed and then there syria russia and china are frequently vetoing resolutions that they view as misconceived this is causing american lawmakers to say that they are a threat to global security the problem is the international community is being held hostage by china and russia just vetoed a united nations security council resolution condemning the assad. jeem every time that's been tried they have blocked former u.n. ambassador for the united states samantha power a longtime advocate of u.s. military interventions has said that perhaps russia and china's veto power should be removed if a particular body real self to be dysfunctional then people are going to go i'll swear and if that happened more than syria and ukraine and you start to see cross the border paralysis it was certainly it your paradigm is the security council's tejas as it grew to international security it's sort of the trump tower version of the u.n. reform he simply wants to be on the mount i suppose one can wish him well but i don't think it's the right way to approach the more profound questions of peace which to me balancing with a world against each other is a bit more important than balancing the budget the united nations charter does not allow for pay to play games votes are not for sale for the usa calls the u.n. disrespectful it should remember that it's a global platform for compromise where every voice can be heard. r.t. new york. is expected to speak at the u.n. general assembly event is the day and we'll be bringing you all the campus after an illegal makeshift refugee camp appeared on site forty migrants have unlawfully settled at a champagne our den university in northeastern france for security reasons or lectures have been suspended until further notice the president of the university says they won't we start until the authorities can ensure student safety we spoke to him as well as students at the campus. yesterday we witnessed an illegal occupation of the university's grounds due to the situation i can no longer guarantee security there are some children living here and it's impossible for the departments to function normally so i've shut down the university and i'm waiting for solutions to be offered. so it's a shame to sacrifice the interests of six thousand students for the sake of forty people i understand that we're talking about people who are on the streets but still this situation seems unfair to me. at the moment who are being sick roofies by so site more pressure needs to be put on the mayor's office to provide the migrants without a court house at the moment nothing is happening and they're staying into an illegal camp. r.t. sent a letter asking for clarification on the matter from the local authorities but so far we've had no response and we will update you as soon as we hear anything. with the refugee influx into europe growing by the day it's not the first case of migrants setting up makeshift camps at public sites one migrant camp that emerged in the belgian capital brussels just a few weeks ago has been branded a second kalai jungle up to four hundred refugees have gathered there desperate for food and shelter in another case this time in the french capital authorities placed huge boulders under a bridge in a bid to deter a makeshift camp that has emerged but the move was criticized by local activists who argued the refugees had now or else to go and had not slept for days we spoke to political analyst nicola markovitch about the new camp at the french university he believes the decision to lock students out of the site was correct. the president of the university took the right decision this is not a normal situation you cannot just have migrants they don't know who these migrants are what their purpose there is how long they're going to stay there are sanitary issues there are also problems linked with migrants and crime in different cities in europe today and what we're seeing today is totally to the chaotic can you imagine migrants going on a campus university because there are no more room in town to greet them and this is not the first time that we see these migrants slipping out in the streets to begin tense sleeping in makeshift places because there's no office at least in france cannot cope with this wave of migration today look at today isn't it typical sisters a frantic situation whereby it is given the message to the rest of the world that europe has no borders that europe can greet people from all around the world whether this before you cannot make reasons political reasons and whether saying this they're inviting thousands and hundreds of thousands of migrants to europe the state and the european union is not taking decision because of also political correctness. violent protests have erupted at the georgia institute of technology in the u.s. after a student was killed by campus police. three
