my book is the story of a decade-long friendship between eleanor roosevelt and polly eleanor roosevelt and polly i'm sure almost everyone in the room knows a lot about eleanor roosevelt but i thought that perhaps it would be helpful to say something about who pauli murray was, because i frequently find that people are not as aware of who she was. historians say, many american historians say when the history of the human rights movement for the 20th century is written, one of the people who will stand centerstage in that story is pauli murray, whether the issue is labor rights, women's rights or civil rights, pauli murray was there. she has only begun to receive recognition for her contributions to the nation, and some of the examples of the work has to do with civil rights, with women's rights andt with labor. and i want to just briefly say a little bit about some of them. for example, thurgood marshall's legal team relied upon work she did as a student in the law school at harvard university in crafting the brief for the brown decision. if you take a look at the essay she wrote in the
