the idea of a federal investigation into sexual abuse in hollywood seems a little out of left field and when you see the context for, which is ample. there have been a lot of investigations along these lines in different sectors of our society and economy, why now? >> colleges, universities, corporate america and there's a lot of resources put into those investigations. a lot of young lawyers hired to work in those investigations. when you really hear the comments of obviously the new yorker piece in the now descriptions 20 years later from really powerful women, people don't like women who are worth hundreds of millions of dollars today. finally coming out and tell the story. i think a lot of young women ask the question, how was this tolerated? how is not only this tolerated over decades, but if i had heard about it in 1999, which i did from friends will know him well -- poor mike, but i knew about it. if i knew about it, everyone knew about it. the idea that i'm shocked, come on. >> tucker: this didn't take place and some 12-voting zip code in west virginia, took place at the very ce

so christopher steele is a well known entity to federal investigators. what we don't know much about are his sub sources and the individuals, presumably, some located in russia, who provided him with this material, some of which is quite salacious as we all know. but the other thing is, there have been major elements of the steele dossier that have panned out. one of the central elements, the russians and it was written in june of 2016, last year, that the russians were going to mount a multi-prong campaign to advance donald trump and denigrate hillary clinton. that was written before the united states government reached that conclusion. so it seem like there could be more truth in those pages. >> when we think about the authority that the mueller team has to probe members of the trump team and the president himself, how important do you think the access to irs records has been? >> well, my guess is that mueller's team is looking very closely at irs records. we have to remember that there are really three mandates when it comes to mueller's investigation

the first indictments from robert mueller's federal investigation into russian interference in the 2016manafort, who served as president trump's campaign manager, surrendered to authorities earlier this morning. gates who served as manafort's deputy, has also been told to give himself up. the indictment itself does not appear to be directly linked to the 2016 campaign. instead, the two men are charged with a dozen counts accusing them of directing a campaign to lobby u.s. officials on behalf of the ukraine government and then hiding it from american authorities. among the charges, that the two of them were paid $75 million for their work and that they laundered at least some of the money to keep it hidden. the official reaction from the white house thus far is that it is not surprised that special counsel is actively performing its duties. msnbc's garrett haake is live at the fbi field office in washington where manafort was a short time ago. we're keeping our eye on the garage because once they wrap up, he's expected to have bail set, most likely pay it and go home. what do you know? >

with a federal investigation into whether trump colluded with russia, has taken a major turn. three people have been charged. accused of conspiracy, money laundering, and lying to authorities. policy advisor is facing that same charges. this is a month-long investigation into possible crimes, including obstruction of justice. to jennifer.over paul manafort is seen as the big fish. can we talk about george papadopoulos? papadopoulos's name is not one that is well known. he was an unpaid adviser to the trump campaign on foreign-policy issues. he has come forward and is working with the special counsel, robert mueller's investigation, and seems to be cooperating with wearing a wire as recently as last week to continue this investigation. in federal custody for months, since july, but cooperating. should be keeping people in -- it speaks to the fact there is somebody who understands what is happening in the trump campaign. the white house tried to downplay it. this guy was involved on some level and he seems to be saying there were conversations with people who were either russian
