pete? >> mika, we've been told by a number of law enforcement officials that the man responsible for the shooting, their initial belief based on their identification of him is stephen paddock, 64 years old, born april 9th, 1953. property records and the police tell us that he was living with the woman that they talked about earlier, marilou danley. she's, we believe, 62 years old. this is the woman clark county authorities said earlier today that they were looking for. they're still looking for her. we don't know what role, if any, she played in the shooting. it may have been none at all. we don't know whether she was in the hotel room at the time the shooting happened. we don't know if she was with him in the hotel. some people have said that they thought they saw the two of them together. some witnesses, i should say, some people who have been staying at the hotel said they thought they saw the two of them together in the hotel before the shooting, down in the public areas of the hotel. w

pete, what's the latest you can tell us? >> reporter: we're told now, matt, that when the authorities entered his hotel room they found several weapons. we don't know yet what kind of weapons those were, and we know there's an urgent trace going on to try to figure out what the weapons were. one question here is we know that he's dead and the assumption here among the federal authorities i've been talking to is that he was shot by the police that breached the room, but we're working to confirm that whether he shot himself or whether he was shot by the authorities. we think he was shot by the police when they basically blew the door open into his hotel room. once they figured out where the shots were coming from. the suspect, stephen paddock, 64 years old, born april 9, 1953. lived in mesquite, nevada, where a search is going on now of his house. this woman, marilou danley, was his roommate there and some eyewitnesses have said they saw the two of them together at the hotel. but now there's a lot of work going on. it's pretty

i would add to what pete williams said. i'd like to point out that usually breathlessness in the reporting of legal matters is inversely proportional to the knowledge of them. pete is always restrained so i always listen very closely. mr. papadopoulos was not charged with any crime for seeking the dirt on hillary clinton. i think this is probably the most overlooked aspect of the story today. is that if it was illegal to go after the bait that the russians put out there, then he wasn't charged with that. he's very much up to his neck in this. and there may be others. certainly manafort and gates. but thus far, papadopoulos was not charged for wanting those e-mails. and that tells me a lot about what the special counsel thinks about what matters in this investigation. >> i was a little surprised there, hugh, to hear you compare the investigation so far to watergate. frank, you know how the fbi operates and conducts investigations like this. what's been going through your mind over these last 24 hours? what sticks out to you?

justice correspondent pete williams has the story on that. pete, what's the change? >> craig, for the first time in its more than 100-year history, the boy scouts have decided to admit girls into scouting, cub scouts and scouting, and allow girls to achieve the coveted rank of eagle scout, which is scouting's highest honor. we learned this was a unanimous vote by the boy scouts' board of directors. they'll have a two-phase program here. they'll begin allowing younger girls to become cub scouts starting next year. the cub scout units will either be all girls or all girls. local units can have both or either one, whichever they chose. they will be single gender organizations. the following year in 2019, the boy scouts will begin establishing a program for girls that will allow them to get to the rank of eagle scout. now, the reason for this, scouting says, is simply the change in american life. the chief scouting executive says, and this is a quote, we believe it is critical to evolve how our programs meet the needs of families interested in positive and life-long expe

actually, i think we just lost pete. he is talking to some sources to get an update on the suspect there. we want to go to jim. jim, when you're look at that vantage point, which i think is interesting -- and i want you to talk about this. talk about the number of casualties. 20-plus people are dead, that number obviously changing by the minute. and seeing the distance there, from the mandalay bay to the concert venue, are you surprised by that number, considering how far -- and, by the way, maybe i'm wrong. maybe it's not as far as it looks. i'm not there. i can't necessarily see. are you surprised at all by the distance and the casualty numbers? >> i was actually surprised early when they were saying there was only two dead. i was watching the video of somebody firing a machine gun, submachine gun or machine gun from an elevated position. those two things didn't match. but when the sheriff came out and told us the real story of the horror, the carnage that was reaped on the people that, matches the sound that we heard.
