nbc's hallie jackson joins me now from hanoi, vietnam, with the latest, and hallie, can you tell us, what did president trump say? >> a lot of news coming out of that news conference specifically as it relates to russian president vladimir putin. you know the two of them, over in da nang had that interaction where russian interference in the election apparently came up. the president as you rightly note clarified some of the remarks that he made on air force one to reporters regarding whether he believes putin believes that he denied it essentially. it gets a little bit convoluted. i want you to listen to what the president had to say when he was asked about this about eight hours or so ago. listen. >> i'm surprised that there's any conflict on this. what i said there is that i believe he believes that and that's very important for somebody to believe. i believe that he feels that he and russia did not meddle in the election. as to whether i believe it or not, i'm with our agencies, especially as currently constituted with their leadership. i believe until our intel agencies. >> so t

>> reporter: hey there, hallie, good morning to you. the things that the governor and mayor of new york city wanted people to do this morning, was to get up and go about their business as usual. that has certainly been the case here. we have seen a lot of people going to work and school, taking their camera phones out and taking a look at the home depot pickup truck a block away. there is a police wrecker there. they are just waiting to finish processing the scene before we understand that truck is going to be taken away. and this all ended, this rampage with the pickup truck, after the driver hit the school bus with children in it. and one of the children critically injured of those 11. one of the things we can tell you is that he got out of the pickup truck and there was cell phone video. you see him wandering around with a paint gun and pellet gun in his hands. and some people are surmising that he was hoping to engage a police officer, which did happen, and this is unusual in this case is that we have a surviving attacker. here's wh

hallie, there was a lot here. i think i actually want to start, not with tillerson but with something she said in response to a question about the videos that the president retweeted. she said that she thought that those retweets would "elevate the conversation." did that stick out to you? what else did we hear? >> reporter: well, the part of those videos that stuck out the most, acknowledgement that president didn't know the source of the videos when deciding to retweet them. speaks to a question you heard some colleagues, should not the president be held to a higher standard? the dutch embassy said one of those videos wa not accurate, not correct yet ended up on a twitter page, elevated, to use the language of the president, to the 40 million-plus twitter followers. the white house, sarah huckabee sanders, i think, trying to make the argument the president is trying to talk about the national security threat. the point is, he's elevating, in fact, factually, look at the number of people, britain three days ago,

nbc chief white house correspondent, hallie jackson, joins me now.lie, walk us through this back and forth of the president and the democratic minority leader. >> and even more recently, craig, what has happened with the president inside that cabinet meeting. sure, you heard the president within the last hour or so escalate this essentially attack on the diversity visa lottery program. that seems to be where the focus is now getting centered here at the white house. chuck schumer in the house supported it but it was signed by a republican president, george h.w. bush. it lets in 50,000 green cards a year randomly selected from countries that didn't have a lot of immigration coming into this country in the first place. there are certain requirements including high school education, a couple years work experience, no criminal back ground. now, it is confirmed that is how the suspect in this terror attack got into the u.s. i spoke with one administration official who said, yes, this is now going to be a concerted effort to try to tear down this diversity

let me go back to my colleague, hallie jackson, before i let you go, you talked about china. we're talking about china here, how tough do you expect president trump to be when he goes to china? the white house thinks china is the one country with president xi jinping who has the power to stop north korea from the nuclear provocations? >> reporter: that's going to be the u.s.'s biggest card to play, if it ends up playing that card with north korea, and that is why that visit is so important, not just because of the north korean discussion, but the trade talk as well. remember, you have the ceo delegation heading to china, too, so a lot of business folks are watching to see how that develops. i think on north korea, you are going to see the president exert as much pressure as he can on xi jinping. these are two leaders that unlike president moon here in south korea where the president is starting to develop that relationship, he and xi are frankly pretty tight. remember the mar-a-lago summit in florida back last year or end of the year when the two of them were sort of together

ha hallie jackson joining us from hanoi.t can you tell us that was on the agenda for president trump in the philippines? >> reporter: so a couple things. he has two big summits of southeast asian countries. and when it comes to the meeting specifically, the bilateral with rodrigo duterte, this will be something a lot of people are watching for a couple reasons. number one, who is duterte. he is a guy that is highly controversial, you have this drug war happening in the philippines, thousands of killings. duterte called former president obama an s.o.b. in the polite translation. he joked about killing somebody although a spokesman said later he was kidding about that. this is a leader that will have to be handled with kid gloves and the big question, number two, will president trump bring up the human rights issue with duterte. you have a lot of advocates looking to see what that interaction will be like. it comes after president trump in past meetings with leaders with questionable human rights records say i'd rather talk ab

first to hallie jackson and just about to move into the press briefing room.u tell us that you know and what is about to happen? >> sure. so this is going to be the sort of two and two as they call it in the white house parlance. see the prime minister, president trump side by side and each give remarks and then call on a couple members of the media on japanese and american side. so we're here waiting for that. i'm on the phone and cannot do live shots here from where the president has been live meeting with folks here including the families of japanese people who have been abducted by the north korean regime. this is i think an interesting moment. that's what just wrapped up for the president in the last couple of minutes and i had an official saying that the president has an emotional connection and that is when he really feels affected by something. i think back to, for example, otto warmbier and likely came up in the meeting and the way that the president had that emotional connection to his family and sort of visceral response of let's get this person out
