nbc 10 mitch blocker is live near the site of that break on fowler street to explain. mitch?> reporter: at this point, the water has been off for a couple of hours. you can see the philadelphia walter department, they've completed their work for the day. but just a few hours ago, just before noon today, this road, it was still a river of water. >> i noticed this morning when i woke up our water pressure was low. when i got over here i saw this. >> reporter: george says this neighborhood's calls to the water department went unanswered for hours. >> it looks like a river. like, if you look at it, it's crazy. >> reporter: james called too. >> we called the water department. they said a lot of people were on holiday. so it's like, unacceptable, i think. >> reporter: the philadelphia water department says it was here wednesday to check out what someone reported as a water sound. by late thursday, you could hear and see it. the water department spokesman said they got calls after 7:00 thursday night. >> we did look at it. we were -- determined it could stay on, allowing water servi

. >> nbc 10's mitch blocker found out it was all for the sake of the neighborhood's thanksgiving meals. >> reporter: friday morning, the water is still pouring down fowler street. the pressure needed to pump it up the hills, forcing thousands of gallons through the eight inch main below. >> 6:00 a.m. this morning, there's basically been a river going down fowler street. >> reporter: neighbors called for help thursday night. the water department says it made a choice to leave the water on to not interrupt thanksgiving. >> we had a smaller staff on. and we did not find this water main break causing any property damage. so we decided to let the water main stay on and make repairs today. >> reporter: according to the water department repairs like this are going to become more frequent. philadelphia individuals about two water main breaks a day. most happen between december and march, starting the first week of december. the philly water department will have more crews working 12 hour shifts to manage. the neighbors today did not think the response was fast enough. when we got here philadel

nbc 10's mitch blocker is live over the scene in sky force 10. what can you tell us? >> reporter: this fire in southwest philadelphia has completely gutted this row home. you can see those philadelphia firefighters still spraying water, putting out the hot spots and the smoke that's rising from what is now ashes inside that home. you can see those firefighters on the roof there. if you notice, they can reach through the roof and talk to their crews inside the house. that is the extent of the damage here in southwest philadelphia. the fire department was able to make quick work of the fire. it didn't damage much of the surrounding property but they continue to put out the hot spots and no reports of any injuries i should also pass that information along. nbc 10 news. >>> all right. if you haven't done so yet today, take the time to thank a veteran for their service. in fort washington today, take a look, stubdents at upper dublin high school listened to two veterans and a gold star father. a history teacher set it up. she hopes students get a better understanding of co
